Happy July, everyone! While many parts of the world are basking in glorious sunshine, here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re still patiently awaiting the full embrace of summer. After a notably cool, lengthy, and rainy spring, we experienced a brief tease of 80-90 degree weather, only to retreat to cooler temperatures and intermittent rain showers. Our unique climate often feels like a constant balance act between seasons.
Indeed, our corner of the country is quite distinct. I understand that for many of you who have been enduring sweltering heat for weeks, the thought of 60-degree weather and gentle rain might sound incredibly appealing! It truly is all about perspective, isn’t it? Personally, I yearn for the warmth and the bright promise of sun-drenched mornings, which often elude us with our typical gray and overcast starts. But I remain optimistic; our time for consistent summer bliss will undoubtedly arrive.
This month’s collection of favorites kicks off with a delightful summertime activity we managed to enjoy during a rare warm spell. We’ll also delve into an incredibly handy iPhone trick for identifying plants, explore some healthy and delicious pet treats, review innovative produce bags designed to extend freshness, and, of course, share a comprehensive rundown of all the captivating books I read and engaging shows I watched throughout June.
I always love hearing about your own discoveries! Please feel free to share your “good things” with me in the comments below.
Embracing Nature: A Serene Escape in the High Cascades

One of the true highlights of June was a perfectly timed weekend getaway to central Oregon, where we visited my family in LaPine. We were incredibly fortunate to catch a window of spectacular weather, transforming our visit into an idyllic outdoor adventure. The crisp, clean air and abundant sunshine provided the ideal backdrop for exploring the breathtaking High Cascades region.
On a particularly beautiful late morning, my husband and I embraced the tranquility of the water in our kayaks, while our daughter gracefully navigated the lake on her inflatable paddleboard. We launched our aquatic journey from Sheep’s Bridge, allowing the gentle currents to guide us towards the expansive Wickiup Reservoir. The experience of gliding across the glassy surface, surrounded by the majestic, pine-forested mountains, was nothing short of revitalizing.
It was immensely satisfying to be back on the water, soaking in the panoramic natural beauty. The serene atmosphere was punctuated by the sights and sounds of local wildlife – the rustling of leaves in the breeze, the distant calls of various birds, and even the awe-inspiring glimpse of a bald eagle soaring high above. These moments of connection with nature are truly restorative, reminding us to slow down and simply revel in the simple joys of life. Such experiences are, without a doubt, among the very best things summer has to offer, providing a much-needed respite and a deep sense of peace.
Genius iPhone Hack: Instantly Identify Plants with Your Camera Roll

One of my most exciting discoveries this month is a fantastic, often overlooked feature within the iPhone’s operating system (I believe it was introduced in a recent iOS update, perhaps one or two versions ago, though I only just became aware of its full capabilities). Imagine being able to identify objects, landmarks, and most thrillingly, plants, directly from your photos! This built-in functionality is a game-changer for gardeners, hikers, and anyone curious about the natural world around them.
I had previously utilized this feature during a trip to Ireland, where it proved useful for identifying some of the magnificent castles we encountered, though with varying degrees of accuracy. However, it was a delightful surprise to learn that this same powerful tool extends to identifying flowers and plants. No more downloading separate apps or struggling with complicated interfaces – the solution is already nestled within your photo library.
Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide on how to leverage this incredible plant identification tool:
- Step 1: Capture Your Subject. Begin by taking a clear photo of the plant, flower, or even the mysterious weed you wish to identify. Ensure the subject is well-lit and in focus.
- Step 2: Access Your Photo. Navigate to your Photos app and select the picture you just took.
- Step 3: Look for the ‘i’ Icon. At the bottom of your screen, you’ll notice a blue circle icon with a lowercase ‘i’ inside it. This is your information button.
- Step 4: Check for Identification Cues. If this circle appears as a plain blue ‘i’, it indicates that no specific identification is available for the elements within that particular photo.
- Step 5: Tap for Insights. However, if the blue circle with the ‘i’ has a subtle addition – a couple of small stars appearing to its upper left – then eureka! This signifies that your iPhone has detected identifiable objects. Tap on this icon, and it will direct you to an identification page.
- Step 6: Discover More. From there, tap the “Look Up” option, and you will be presented with a results page, much like the example you see in the image above, offering potential identifications for your plant.
While this feature isn’t absolutely 100% accurate every single time, I’ve found its performance to be remarkably on par with, if not superior to, many of the specialized plant identification apps I’ve experimented with in the past. For instance, in the example photo provided, the first suggested option might not be correct, but the second suggestion confidently provides the Latin name of a Peace Lily, which is indeed the correct identification for the plant pictured. This level of precision, combined with its sheer convenience, makes it an invaluable tool.
I must admit, I’ve often felt underwhelmed by dedicated plant apps, finding them cumbersome or inconsistent. The seamless integration of this feature into the native Photos app is what truly sets it apart. It’s so effortlessly easy and convenient that I anticipate using it frequently, especially for those pesky, unidentified weeds that pop up in the garden! It saves time, streamlines the process, and satisfies that immediate curiosity. Have you had the chance to utilize this smart feature yet? I’d love to hear about your experiences!
A Treat for Our Furry Friends: Discovering Shameless Pet Treats

For a long time, our beloved dog, Jynx, has been accustomed to single-ingredient treats, primarily liver and salmon, which we use both as a reward during training sessions and as an incentive to encourage her appetite. While these pure options are fantastic for her health, there’s one particular type of treat that holds a special place in her heart (and stomach): Shameless Pets jerky treats. I affectionately refer to them as her “healthy junk food” because, while they do contain more ingredients than her single-source alternatives, they are crafted with thoughtful, upcycled components and no artificial nasties, making them a fantastic choice for conscious pet parents.
Jynx, like many small dogs, sometimes struggles with inconsistent eating habits. Unlike our previous dog, Samson, who required strategies to slow down his enthusiastic eating, Jynx occasionally needs a little extra persuasion. In those moments, crumbling a small piece of these irresistible jerky treats over her food works wonders, instantly sparking her interest and ensuring she gets the nutrients she needs. Their palatable taste and appealing texture make them an excellent motivator.
Given how essential these treats are to Jynx’s routine, running out is simply not an option. However, sourcing them became a minor challenge when Imperfect Foods, my usual supplier, stopped carrying them. This left me with the options of ordering from Chewy, which incurred additional shipping costs, or purchasing them in bulk from Amazon at a significantly higher price point – neither of which felt like an ideal solution for a regular replenishment.
This is why I was absolutely thrilled to discover that Grove Collaborative now stocks Shameless Pets treats! Their pricing is comparable to Chewy, but the immense benefit is that I already place regular orders with Grove for various household essentials. This means I can simply toss a bag (or two!) of Jynx’s favorite jerky treats into my existing order for items like eco-friendly laundry soap, dishwasher detergent, and sustainable walnut sponges, completely bypassing any additional shipping fees. This newfound convenience is truly a “good thing,” simplifying my shopping routine and ensuring Jynx never goes without her beloved “healthy junk food.” It’s a win-win for both me and my furry companion!
Revolutionizing Your Fridge: Produce GreenBags for Extended Freshness

One of the persistent challenges in any kitchen is keeping fresh produce vibrant and edible for as long as possible. Far too often, fruits and vegetables purchased with good intentions end up wilting or spoiling before they can be fully enjoyed, contributing to food waste. It was this ongoing struggle that led me to stumble upon Produce GreenBags during a recent Amazon search. Intrigued by the positive reviews and their affordable price point, I decided to put them to the test.
After about a month of consistent use, I’m ready to share my findings on how these bags perform. My observations reveal that they are remarkably effective for certain types of produce, while less so for others. Understanding these nuances is key to maximizing their benefits.
The Pros of Using Produce GreenBags:
- Exceptional Durability and Reusability: The first thing you’ll notice about these bags is their substantial thickness. Unlike flimsy disposable plastic bags, these feel robust and well-made. They are easily washable, allowing for repeated use over an extended period. I can confidently say that with proper care, these bags are designed to last for many years, making them an environmentally conscious and cost-effective choice.
- Generous Sizing for Bulkier Produce: A significant advantage is the variety of sizes available, including options large enough to accommodate substantial items like huge heads of lettuce or cabbage. This addresses a common frustration with standard Ziploc bags, which often prove too small for bigger vegetables. I typically wash and reuse my standard plastic bags, but these GreenBags handle the larger items effortlessly.
- Remarkable Freshness Extension: This is where the GreenBags truly shine. I’ve observed genuinely impressive results with produce such as zucchini, bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, apples, and cabbage. For instance, a zucchini I unintentionally overlooked for two weeks emerged without any soft spots or slimy patches – a fate that would have been guaranteed in a regular plastic bag, or it would have shriveled in a mesh bag. Similarly, whole bell peppers remained firm and crisp for over a week, completely free of shriveling or softening. They truly make a noticeable difference in preventing premature spoilage for these specific items.
- Excellent Value: Considering the quality and the number of bags included in a package, I found the price point to be very competitive when compared with other similar produce storage solutions on the market. It feels like a smart investment in reducing food waste.
The Cons of Using Produce GreenBags:
- Storage Challenges: When new, the bags are quite slick, and once they’ve been used and washed, they tend to become somewhat bulky. Finding an organized way to store them can be a bit tricky. Currently, I’m repurposing an old plastic baggie box to keep them tidy, but I’m still on the lookout for a more ideal storage solution.
- Not Ideal for Leafy Greens: This is an important caveat. Despite their effectiveness with other produce, these bags do NOT perform well with leafy greens. Every type of green I’ve attempted to store – including lettuce, kale, and spinach – wilted significantly within a day or two, almost as if they had been left unprotected in the fridge. While I’ve read suggestions that leafy greens might fare better if they are completely dry and the bags are left slightly open to breathe, ensuring complete dryness for greens before storage is practically impossible for me. Therefore, for leafy greens, I’d recommend sticking to alternative storage methods.
Based on my personal, albeit unscientific, observations, I enthusiastically recommend Produce GreenBags for their ability to significantly extend the life of many common fruits and vegetables. The sheer convenience of having spacious, reusable bags that genuinely keep certain items fresher for longer is a major win in my household. The key is to understand their specific strengths and limitations, and to pair them with the right produce.
Just knowing that I can prevent zucchini from becoming slimy for an extended period feels like a huge victory in the fight against food waste! Give them a try and discover how they can help you keep your produce crisp and delicious.

June Reads: Inspiring Stories and Thought-Provoking Narratives

June was a fantastic month for diving into a diverse range of literary worlds. From enchanting historical fiction to insightful non-fiction and captivating sci-fi, here’s a detailed look at the books that filled my evenings and commutes.
Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan. Having absolutely adored Patti Callahan’s previous work, *Becoming Mrs. Lewis*, which beautifully explored the life of Joy Davidman, C.S. Lewis’s wife, I was eager to pick up her latest novel. *Once Upon a Wardrobe* delivers a wonderfully imaginative blend of historical fiction and poignant storytelling. The narrative centers on a college-aged girl attending Oxford, whose beloved younger brother is gravely ill. His only comfort comes from C.S. Lewis’s magical world of Narnia, specifically *The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe*. Driven by her brother’s earnest desire to understand the origins of Narnia and its enigmatic author, she bravely contacts C.S. Lewis himself. Through her captivating encounters with him, she not only unravels the deeper meanings behind the iconic story but also discovers profound truths about life, love, and loss. While I still hold *Becoming Mrs. Lewis* in slightly higher esteem, this novel was an utterly charming and deeply satisfying read that beautifully captures the enduring power of stories and imagination. It’s perfect for fans of literary fiction, C.S. Lewis, and tales that blend reality with wonder.
Another Gospel? by Alisa Childers. This book comes from Alisa Childers, a former member of the popular Christian group Zoe Girl, who has since transitioned into a prominent role as a Biblical apologist, hosting a successful podcast and now authoring this impactful book. *Another Gospel?* chronicles her personal and intellectual journey after encountering what she describes as “progressive Christianity” within a new church community. This experience spurred her to undertake a rigorous, in-depth study of the Bible, engaging in extensive coursework and solidifying her faith through a robust foundation of theological knowledge. The book details shocking revelations about what some self-professed Christians she met believed (or, more accurately, didn’t believe), and Childers meticulously delves into the core truths of the Bible to address these misconceptions. Reading this book was profoundly impactful for me; I gained a wealth of knowledge and it significantly strengthened my own faith by providing clear, well-reasoned arguments for essential Christian doctrines. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Christian apologetics, defending their faith, or navigating the complexities of modern religious thought.
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green. My husband, Brian, and I often enjoy listening to audiobooks together, and we picked this one up expecting a fun, straightforward sci-fi adventure. The premise is certainly intriguing: towering, enigmatic metal statues suddenly appear overnight in major cities across the globe. The story follows a young woman in New York who happens to be the first to post a video about one of these ‘Carls’ (as they become known) on social media, inadvertently thrusting herself into global fame. What we anticipated as a story primarily focused on the sci-fi mystery—the origin of these statues and their purpose—evolved into a more social commentary on the impact of “going viral” and the overwhelming pressures of sudden, intense public scrutiny. While it offered some thought-provoking insights into internet culture and identity in the digital age, the shift in focus meant it wasn’t quite the sci-fi narrative we were hoping for. It was an interesting listen, but ultimately, we didn’t feel compelled to continue with the second book in the series. Recommended for those who enjoy contemporary fiction with a light sci-fi twist and a deep dive into internet fame.
Book Lovers by Emily Henry. This is the latest release from Emily Henry, and it has garnered a tremendous amount of buzz this summer, often hailed as the quintessential summer read. While it was an enjoyable diversion, I personally found her previous novel, *Beach Read*, to be more captivating, primarily because the characters felt more authentically developed and relatable to me. I initially went into *Book Lovers* with the expectation that it would be a charming story about individuals who share a deep, passionate bond over literature. However, it quickly became clear that the title referred more to the protagonists’ professions as book editors within the publishing world, rather than their personal affections for reading itself. While they certainly liked books, the core of the story revolved more around their professional and romantic entanglements. Despite this slight misalignment with my expectations, it’s still a genuinely fun and witty read, perfect if you’re looking for a lighthearted escape. And for those who appreciate a satisfying resolution, it definitely delivers a “happily ever after,” even if I had a moment of worry towards the end!
Where the Rhythm Takes You by Sarah Dass. This novel immediately caught my eye with the phrase “inspired by Persuasion.” However, I quickly realized I should have paid closer attention to the word “inspired” rather than anticipating a direct retelling, as I struggled to find many discernible elements of Jane Austen’s beloved novel within its pages (which, incidentally, is my favorite of her works). My main point of contention revolved around the age of the main characters; their high school sweetheart romance, marked by poor communication and subsequent separation, felt difficult to reconcile with their stated age of just seventeen. This made the central conflict less believable for me. Nevertheless, the book possessed a lighthearted charm, and its vibrant setting on the island of Tobago offered a refreshing and unique backdrop that I thoroughly enjoyed. Despite the appealing setting, I must mention that the narrative did suffer from significant repetition, particularly concerning the main characters’ internal feelings and emotional cycles. This became so pronounced in the audiobook version that I found myself skipping an entire three-hour section without missing any crucial plot points by the ending! It’s a sweet, summery read for those who enjoy YA romance and tropical settings, but perhaps not for strict Austen purists.
Happiness For Beginners by Katherine Center. This novel was a delightful surprise, exceeding my initial expectations. I was drawn in by the premise, which perfectly aligns with my fondness for “fish-out-of-water” narratives – in this case, a city girl bravely signing up for a rugged outdoor survival experience. The setup alone promised engaging situations and humorous challenges, and it certainly delivered on that front. However, the story quickly evolved into something much more profound and multifaceted. Katherine Center masterfully delves into deeper layers of human experience, exploring themes of grief, self-discovery, and the courage it takes to embrace new beginnings. The characters were incredibly well-developed, and their personal growth throughout the story felt authentic and deeply resonant. Having heard excellent things about this author, this was my first foray into her work, and I can confidently say it will not be my last. For anyone seeking a heartwarming, insightful, and subtly profound story that balances humor with genuine emotional depth, this book is an absolute must-read.
Vanderbilt by Anderson Cooper. I have a particular fondness for historical memoirs that blend personal narrative with broader societal insights, and this book by Anderson Cooper, offering an intimate look into his own family’s storied past, perfectly fits that niche. As the son of Gloria Vanderbilt, Cooper is uniquely positioned to provide personal anecdotes and firsthand observations that bring the illustrious and often tragic history of the Vanderbilt dynasty to life. Some of the revelations within the book were genuinely jaw-dropping. The sheer scale of their wealth, evident in the amounts spent on their extravagant homes only to have them sold just 40-50 years later for *only the land value*, was astounding. Equally shocking were the figures detailing the vast inheritances received by subsequent generations and how quickly they were dissipated. It’s a compelling, often cautionary tale of immense privilege, the complexities of family legacies, and the ephemeral nature of even the most colossal fortunes. A truly captivating read for anyone fascinated by American history, dynastic families, and the intricate interplay of wealth and personal identity.
American Royals by Katharine McGee. In keeping with the lighter, summery reading mood, I picked up *American Royals* because its central concept utterly captivated me: an alternate history where George Washington became the first King of America instead of its first President. The idea of a modern-day American monarchy, complete with a royal family and all the associated pomp and circumstance, felt incredibly intriguing and brimming with narrative potential. Sadly, while the premise was strong, the execution leaned much more heavily into young adult drama. The story primarily revolved around the young royals’ behavior—good, bad, and often scandalous—their friendships, romantic entanglements, and how all of this played out in the ever-present glare of social media. While it offered some entertaining escapism, I found myself wishing the narrative had focused more on the historical implications and the political landscape of such an alternate reality, perhaps starting from the foundational shift rather than solely on the contemporary drama. It’s a fun, quick read for those who enjoy YA romance and royal fiction, but perhaps less so for readers hoping for a deep dive into alternate history.
June’s Must-Watch Entertainment: Our Top Picks
Beyond the pages of books, June also brought some exceptional viewing experiences to our screens. Here are the films and series that captured our attention and provided memorable entertainment.
Top Gun: Maverick. We finally made it to the cinema to see *Top Gun: Maverick* after consistently reading rave reviews, and we were absolutely blown away. What truly set this film apart was its commitment to practical effects; the flying sequences and stunts were largely achieved without green screens, lending an incredible sense of realism and visceral thrill to every scene. It was genuinely an “on the edge of your seat” experience that kept us captivated from start to finish. Beyond the spectacular action, the movie skillfully managed to build upon the legacy of the original, offering a fresh narrative that honored its predecessor without feeling like a mere rehash. The character development, emotional depth, and impressive performances made it far more than just an action flick. It’s a definitive must-see for anyone who loves high-octane action, compelling storytelling, and a nostalgic yet innovative cinematic journey.
Tick, Tick…Boom, Netflix. Before watching this film, my knowledge was limited to it being directed by the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and starring Andrew Garfield, who performs all the songs himself. This musical drama, in essence, is a semi-autobiographical memoir told through song, based on an off-Broadway play created by Jonathan Larson, the visionary composer behind the award-winning musical *Rent*. The film offers a poignant glimpse into Larson’s life and artistic struggles as he grapples with the pressures of time, creativity, and the pursuit of his dreams just before his breakthrough. We found it to be an incredibly moving and powerful piece of cinema. While it certainly has its sad moments, exploring themes of ambition, sacrifice, and the relentless ticking clock of a creative life, it is ultimately a compelling and beautifully executed tribute to a remarkable artist. Highly recommended for fans of musicals, biographical dramas, and anyone with an appreciation for the creative process and the theater world.
Jerry and Marge Go Large, Paramount+. What an absolute delight! This film is a genuinely heartwarming and incredibly fun watch, made even more captivating by the fact that it’s based on a true story. It centers around a recently retired man, Jerry, who, with his keen mathematical mind, discovers a legal flaw in a state lottery game that allows him to win consistently. The beauty of the story lies not just in the clever scheme, but in how his wife, Marge, enthusiastically joins him in this unique endeavor, turning it into their special shared activity. They continued to win for years, but what truly elevates their story is their generosity; they shared their significant proceeds with family and friends, and crucially, they invested back into their small, struggling town, helping to revitalize it. This movie is a perfect example of a feel-good film that inspires with its message of community, ingenuity, and the joy of collaboration. It’s an ideal choice for anyone looking for a charming, uplifting, and inspiring true story.
Hustle, Netflix. The title *Hustle* might suggest a variety of genres, but this film is a compelling basketball drama that genuinely surprised me. Starring Adam Sandler in a remarkably dramatic and nuanced role, it’s already being touted by many critics and fans alike as one of the best, if not *the* best, basketball movies ever made. A significant reason for its authenticity and appeal is the inclusion of numerous real-life basketball players, which adds an incredible layer of credibility to the on-court action. Even for someone like me, who doesn’t typically follow basketball with fervent interest, the storyline is incredibly engaging. It’s a classic underdog tale infused with grit, determination, and heartfelt performances, offering a profound sense of satisfaction as you root for the characters. This is undeniably a feel-good movie that transcends its sports genre, making it an excellent watch for anyone who appreciates a strong narrative, compelling character arcs, and an inspiring journey of perseverance.
Night Sky, Amazon (8 episodes). This captivating series is a brilliant showcase for the incredible talents of Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons, who portray an older couple navigating the profound complexities of aging and shared grief. The narrative takes an extraordinary turn with the discovery of an otherworldly portal, secretly hidden beneath their property, which astonishingly allows them to travel to another planet. Far from being a fast-paced sci-fi thriller, *Night Sky* is a thoughtful, slow-burn meditation on deep, enduring relationships, the quiet challenges of growing older, and the nuanced aspects of mental illness. These profound human elements are expertly interwoven with a subtle, unfolding sci-fi mystery, creating a truly unique and clever viewing experience. It’s a series that rewards patience, offering rich character development and a layered plot that invites contemplation. Highly recommended for viewers who appreciate character-driven dramas with a speculative fiction twist, outstanding performances, and a story that lingers long after the credits roll.
