Why do it Yourself-6 non-creative reasons to DIY

Working online, especially when your livelihood revolves around a website, often leads to intriguing conversations. You meet new people, and inevitably, the question arises: “What do you do for a living?”

My typical response, “I run a website dedicated to teaching and inspiring women to embrace the do-it-yourself approach in various aspects of their lives – from cooking nourishing meals from scratch and cultivating a thriving garden, to transforming their homes into personalized havens,” often elicits a blank stare. Sometimes, it’s followed by a skeptical, “You can actually make money from that?” To which I always joyfully reply, “Absolutely! Thanks to my incredible readers who visit my site, engage with the content, support through affiliate links, and allow me to continue providing valuable resources, yes!”

For many, the concept of a website as a full-time profession remains a mystery. And my concise explanation barely scratches the surface of the comprehensive message I strive to convey on An Oregon Cottage (AOC).

I embarked on this journey in 2009, initially documenting my interests – skills I hadn’t acquired growing up but which brought immense joy and a deep sense of pride. These endeavors included mastering the art of making foods I once believed could only be store-bought, cultivating a productive garden without becoming a slave to it, and undertaking simple yet impactful home projects. My content also encompassed topics close to my heart, such as efficient menu planning, cherishing family traditions, and as life evolved, exploring themes of healthy eating and sustainable weight management.

Over the years, the temptation to narrow my focus to just one or two niche areas was ever-present. Many successful bloggers have thrived by specializing. It’s often easier to write when your entire focus is concentrated on a single theme.

However, I consistently resisted this urge. Primarily, because these diverse areas are not compartmentalized in my own life – and I strongly believe they aren’t in yours either. While we may not all share the exact same interests, the overarching principle that harmonizes all these seemingly disparate topics is profoundly simple:

DO IT YOURSELF

It’s ALL DIY. I find it a bit disheartening that in recent years, the term “DIY” has largely become synonymous with decorating, building, and remodeling. To me, DIY has always been an encompassing lifestyle choice. The moment I realized I could effortlessly craft my own ketchup at home – gaining complete control over its ingredients – or feed my family vibrant produce I had nurtured from seed, or even ingeniously transform an old dresser into a stylish bathroom vanity, I experienced an unparalleled surge of empowerment and confidence. This lifestyle liberates me from the whims of aggressive marketers, from being constrained by my budget, or from feeling tied to a limited set of standard, often uninspiring, choices.

While many contemporary DIY articles and blogs heavily emphasize the creative, artistic side of “do it yourself,” for me, that aspect is often secondary. I don’t typically visualize a finished product in my mind and then feel an urge to create it, as many inherently creative individuals might. Instead, for me, embracing a DIY lifestyle primarily instills a deep sense of pride and well-being. This feeling blossoms when I identify something I know I possess the capability to make, successfully create it, and then often extend that blessing to others, whether it’s through a heartfelt homemade gift or a cherished family recipe.

So, Why Embrace a DIY Lifestyle?

Choosing a simpler, more back-to-basics way of life acts as a powerful antidote to the relentless “crazy-train” of modern living, a pace scientifically linked to shortening lifespans and diminishing our overall joy. When we cultivate an “I can do that” mindset, we not only revel in the pride of a completed project and the joy of blessing others, but we also unlock a multitude of other profound benefits:

1. Financial Freedom and Resourceful Living

One of the most immediate and tangible benefits of a DIY lifestyle is the significant financial savings it offers. By proactively planning meals to utilize existing pantry staples, mending clothes instead of replacing them, or tackling minor home repairs ourselves, we dramatically reduce household expenses. This resourceful approach minimizes waste and encourages a more mindful consumption pattern, moving away from impulse purchases and towards smart, sustainable choices. It’s about making clever use of what you already have, stretching your budget further, and ultimately gaining greater control over your personal finances.

2. Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability

A DIY mindset inherently fosters environmental responsibility. When we choose to upcycle a second-hand treasure into something beautiful and new, rather than buying new, we actively divert items from landfills. This conscious choice reduces our carbon footprint, lessens demand for new manufactured goods (which often involve significant resource extraction and pollution), and promotes a circular economy. From composting kitchen scraps to repurposing old furniture, every DIY effort contributes to a healthier planet and a more sustainable future for everyone.

3. Personalization and Enhanced Home Environment

Transforming your living space through DIY projects allows you to infuse your home and yard with unique character and personality, creating an environment that truly reflects you and your family. Unlike mass-produced items, DIY creations carry a story, a personal touch, and often a higher degree of quality tailored to your specific needs. The immense satisfaction of stepping back and admiring a bookshelf you built, a garden bed you designed, or a wall you painted, all without incurring debt, is deeply rewarding. It’s about crafting a home that feels authentically yours, a sanctuary built with intention and love.

4. Cultivating Health and Holistic Well-being

Embracing a DIY approach to food and nutrition is a cornerstone of health. By growing your own produce, even on a small scale, and cooking with real, wholesome ingredients from scratch, you take control of what nourishes your body and your family’s. This eliminates hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives prevalent in processed foods. The act of cooking and gardening itself is therapeutic, connecting you to nature and the food chain in a meaningful way. It promotes mindful eating habits and supports a holistic approach to physical and mental well-being, leading to a healthier, more vibrant life.

5. Skill Development and Self-Reliance

The DIY lifestyle is a continuous journey of learning and skill acquisition. Each project, whether it’s learning to bake bread, prune fruit trees, or fix a leaky faucet, builds a valuable skillset. This accumulation of practical knowledge makes you more adaptable and self-reliant. Knowing that you possess the fundamental skills to cook nutritious meals, grow food, and make use of available resources provides an invaluable sense of security and preparedness. It’s about being less dependent on external services and more capable of navigating life’s challenges, fostering true independence.

6. Profound Empowerment and Enduring Confidence

Perhaps the most profound benefit of doing it yourself is the immense sense of empowerment and confidence it cultivates. Overcoming a challenge, mastering a new technique, and successfully completing a project fills you with a deep sense of accomplishment. This isn’t merely about the finished product; it’s about proving to yourself that you are capable, resourceful, and in control. This newfound confidence spills over into other areas of life, fostering a resilient “I can do that” attitude that combats feelings of helplessness and boosts overall self-esteem. It’s about realizing your innate potential and living a life of purpose and capability.

Your Unique DIY Path: No Pressure to Do It All

A do-it-yourself lifestyle, much like real life and the diverse content on An Oregon Cottage, encompasses a wide array of areas. However – and this is a crucial point I want everyone to grasp – your personal DIY journey absolutely does not need to include ALL of them.

There will be times when we opt to purchase items instead of making them, perhaps due to time constraints, the difficulty of sourcing specific ingredients, or simply personal preference. But the profound comfort comes from KNOWING we possess the capability to make them if we chose to – that knowledge itself is deeply empowering. Should unforeseen circumstances or a broader catastrophe arise, we would have the fundamental knowledge to cook and nourish our loved ones, to cultivate food, and to ingeniously utilize whatever resources are available. This underlying competence is the essence of true empowerment and resilience.

Personally, I don’t feel compelled to abandon modern conveniences or rely exclusively on my own capabilities. Yet, in the quiet corners of my mind, there’s immense comfort in the assurance that I COULD do much more if the need ever arose. This balance between modern living and self-reliance defines my approach.

That, fundamentally, is what DIY signifies to me: the deep pride and profound enjoyment of living a simple, well-rounded, and meaningful life to the absolute best of my abilities, while simultaneously creating beauty and spreading joy to others. It’s a holistic philosophy for a life well-lived.

Right now, your unique DIY life might manifest as something as simple and rewarding as growing a few varieties of lettuce and carrots in containers on your back patio, crafting a small batch of delicious jam using fresh berries from a local farmer’s market, committing to cooking dinner five nights a week for your family, or artistically creating a new mantel display for the changing seasons. Alternatively, it might involve more ambitious projects, such as daringly creating a stunning floor out of paper or mastering the art of gardening without tilling the soil. And it could certainly include countless other incredible endeavors that I may not even cover here on AOC!
