Here in Western Oregon, the summer heat has truly settled in, turning our landscape hot and dry. It’s been a daily mission to keep our spring plantings well-hydrated, and I confess, a few of our younger shrubs are valiantly battling the elements, reminding me that gardening is truly a labor of love.

On the bright side, our DIY watering system in the vegetable garden is performing admirably, a testament to thoughtful planning. Seeing its success, we’ve already earmarked a similar setup for the sunken garden area beside the house. This future upgrade promises to make summer watering a considerably easier task, freeing up more time to simply enjoy the garden’s bounty.

I know many of you around the globe might be experiencing entirely different weather, perhaps abundant rain or other unique conditions. It truly highlights the diverse experiences we all share with Mother Nature, doesn’t it? Regardless of the weather, our dedication to growing food and cultivating beautiful flowers remains constant, bringing purpose and profound joy into our lives. These simple acts of creation, I believe, are precisely what our world needs more of.

With that spirit in mind, I sincerely hope this collection of ‘good things’ brings a sprinkle of happiness and inspiration into your day, too!

Farmhouse Transformation: Fresh Paint & a Dream Roof

For those of you who follow my journey on Instagram, you’ll know that July was an incredibly busy, yet rewarding, month dedicated to getting the exterior of our beloved farmhouse into absolutely tip-top shape. It was a whirlwind of activity, culminating in a mid-July painting date that we had been eagerly anticipating.

Preparing for the painters involved checking off a rather extensive list of tasks, ensuring every detail was perfect before the brushes touched the siding. This meticulous preparation was key to achieving the flawless finish we envisioned for our home’s transformation. Our to-do list included:

  • Adding battens to the board-and-batten siding sections, a crucial step in achieving that classic farmhouse look.
  • Carefully removing the old rails around the porch, opening up the space and preparing for new architectural details.
  • Trimming out the porch posts with elegant molding, effectively covering the utilitarian metal concrete holders and adding a touch of sophistication.
  • Installing new wood strips to the porch ceiling, revitalizing the area and concealing the old plywood underneath.
  • Replacing the standard “brick” molding around the front and side doors with wider, 5-inch molding to perfectly match the existing window frames, creating a cohesive aesthetic.
  • Performing various essential tasks such as filling gaps, meticulous caulking, and other detailed preparations to ensure a smooth, durable finish.

By the time the painting crew arrived, we were completely ready, and the final result was nothing short of spectacular! The fresh coat of paint has truly elevated the farmhouse’s exterior, bringing a vibrant new life to our home.

Just a week after the painters left, the roofing team arrived to complete the roof installation. We had previously tackled the back half of the house when we expanded the property by eight feet a couple of years ago, so this phase completed the entire roof. And, to my absolute delight, I finally got my favorite feature: a sleek, durable metal roof over the front porch. Oh, be still my heart! It’s everything I dreamed of, adding both charm and enduring quality.

Doesn’t she look lovely now, especially alongside the flourishing side garden? It’s been incredibly gratifying to see this vision come to life. Interestingly, I’ve received quite a few comments from friends and followers who assume we’re “done” with the farmhouse. Haha! If only! While a huge milestone has been achieved, we still have a delightful list of projects to tackle downstairs and an entire upstairs area awaiting its own transformation. The journey of creating our dream home continues, one exciting project at a time!

Smith rock state park

An Oregon Gem: Exploring Smith Rock State Park

July also brought us a wonderful family gathering in Central Oregon, celebrating my dad’s birthday with my sweet stepmama. During our visit, we took the opportunity to explore the breathtaking Smith Rock State Park, nestled just outside of Redmond, north of Bend. This incredible natural wonder offers a dramatic contrast to the lush landscapes of Western Oregon, showcasing towering rock formations and the winding Crooked River.

It was fascinating to hear our daughter’s perspective. Having recently visited five state parks in Utah, she pondered why Oregon has only one official state park (Crater Lake is a national park, of course, but often people refer to it in this context), especially when many of the Utah parks share similar geological features. She was truly awe-struck by Smith Rock, suggesting it could easily hold its own as a national park, standing distinctly apart from the deep blue caldera of Crater Lake.

No, I’m not pictured – someone has to take the photo!

However, we ultimately decided that its current status as a state park is part of its charm. It means it’s incredibly accessible and affordable, with just a $5 day pass, and delightfully less crowded than many national treasures. This allows for a more serene and personal experience with nature. Plus, it’s an absolute hub for rock climbing enthusiasts, offering a thrilling spectacle for visitors to watch climbers ascend the sheer cliffs, testing their limits against the natural grandeur.

Smith Rock is, without a doubt, a true Oregon gem. Its unique beauty, accessibility, and vibrant outdoor activity scene make it a place not to be missed. If you ever find yourself in Central Oregon, do yourself a favor and seize the opportunity to visit this magnificent park. It’s an unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the diverse beauty of our state.

Made On products

Discovering Natural Skin Care with Made On

This month, I had the pleasure of trying out some fantastic new additions to my natural skin care routine from Made On. I’m always on the lookout for effective, wholesome products, and their offerings, including a sore muscle stick and tinted lip balms, truly impressed me.

I was already familiar with their wonderful Bee Silk lotion bar, a staple in my travel kit. Crafted with nourishing beeswax, it’s a solid bar that melts upon contact with warm skin, providing instant hydration without any liquid restrictions — perfect for air travel. It’s a testament to simple, effective ingredients.

The menthol-peppermint muscle balm stick has been a true lifesaver after long days spent gardening or when waking up with unexpected shoulder soreness. While it doesn’t miraculously erase all discomfort, the soothing blend of menthol and peppermint provides a gentle, cooling sensation that definitely helps ease tired muscles. It’s become a welcome ritual after physical exertion, offering a moment of relief.

Thankfully, I haven’t had the occasion to test out the rash cream (and hope not to!), but I’ve been absolutely delighted with their tinted lip balms. They offer all the moisturizing benefits of a traditional balm, but with a subtle hint of color. Don’t be misled by the names like Crimson Rose and Copper Glow; the tint is very sheer, providing a natural, “my lips but better” look that I prefer over heavier lipsticks. It’s hard to discern much difference between the two shades on my lips, as the color is so light and universally flattering, making them suitable for any skin tone.

For anyone interested in exploring high-quality, natural skin care solutions, I highly recommend you check out these and other wonderful offerings from Made On here. Their commitment to pure ingredients and effective formulations shines through in every product. Have you had the chance to try Made On skin care products? I’d love to hear your experiences!

Baking Bliss: Falling in Love with USA Bakeware Pans

Oh my goodness, I am absolutely head-over-heels in love with these baking pans! For years, I’ve been a dedicated home baker, and finding truly reliable bakeware can be a game-changer. I first discovered the magic of USA Bakeware loaf pans a couple of years ago. From the moment I used them, I was struck by their exceptional sturdiness and, most importantly, the complete absence of sticking. My loaves, which sometimes clung stubbornly to other pans, now slid out effortlessly, perfectly formed every single time.

That initial experience left me craving more, and for a while, I’d been longing to upgrade my well-loved, but increasingly worn, sheet pans. This month, I finally took the plunge and purchased a set of two USA Bakeware half sheet pans, and let me tell you, they are nothing short of amazing. The difference is palpable from the very first use.

The greatest revelation? There’s absolutely no need for parchment paper, silicone liners, or even greasing! Just look at the cookies pictured above – I simply placed them directly on the pan, and they slid off cleanly with no residue whatsoever. It truly feels like magic in the kitchen, simplifying my baking process and making cleanup a breeze.

So, what’s the secret behind this incredible performance? These pans are crafted from heavy-gauge aluminized steel, providing superior durability and even heat distribution. They feature a unique corrugated surface design, which isn’t just for aesthetics; it actually facilitates air circulation, ensuring your baked goods cook more evenly and release effortlessly. Additionally, they boast a light, non-stick silicone coating that is proudly PTFE, PFOA, and BPA-free, prioritizing both performance and safety.

My USA Bakeware loaf pans have been a workhorse in my kitchen for over two years now (and if you haven’t guessed, I bake a lot of bread!), and they continue to perform and look just as good as the day I bought them. This long-lasting quality gives me immense confidence in my new sheet pans, knowing they are built to endure countless baking adventures.

While USA Bakeware pans are a bit more of an investment compared to flimsy, cheap alternatives, they are far from the prohibitively expensive gourmet brands. In fact, they offer incredible value, especially if you can find a deal like this fantastic 6-piece set, which includes a cookie sheet, half sheet, loaf pan, 9×13 cake pan, 8×8 cake pan, and a 12-cup muffin pan. At roughly $14 per piece, it’s an absolute steal for professional-grade bakeware!

If you’re serious about baking or simply want to elevate your kitchen experience, I wholeheartedly recommend giving USA Bakeware a try. Have you used USA pans before? I’d love to hear your thoughts and favorite pieces in the comments below!

My New Summer Staple: The Perfect Flattering Sundress

I simply couldn’t wait to share this fantastic summer dress I recently discovered on Amazon! Finding a dress that ticks all the boxes – comfort, style, and a flattering fit – can sometimes feel like a treasure hunt, but this one truly delivers.

What makes this dress so wonderful is its classic A-line shape, which is incredibly flattering on various body types. For reference, I’m 5’5″, and the hem hits perfectly at my knees, ensuring it’s never too short and always appropriate for various occasions. This modest yet stylish length adds to its versatility, making it a go-to piece for warm weather.

One of the most appealing aspects for me is the fabric. The plain colored versions are made predominantly from cotton, which, surprisingly, is becoming harder to find in comfortable summer dresses these days. It’s a beautifully weighted cotton – substantial enough to drape elegantly without clinging, yet light and breathable enough to keep you cool on even the hottest summer days. This natural fiber makes it incredibly comfortable for extended wear.

I’ve already worn it numerous times throughout our hot days here in Oregon. On its own, it’s a breezy and effortless outfit. For cooler evenings or when stepping into air-conditioned spaces, I’ve paired it with a simple white linen button-down shirt, creating a chic and comfortable layered look. Its adaptability means it can easily transition from a casual daytime outing to a relaxed evening gathering with just a few accessory changes.

If you’re on the hunt for a similar versatile and stylish piece, search for the Sleeveless Midi Dress Casual Flared Tank Dress. I opted for the lovely green shade, as you can see, but it’s available in a wide array of colors, all boasting excellent reviews. It’s truly a wardrobe workhorse that combines effortless style with supreme comfort, making it an essential addition to any summer collection.

July Reads: A Literary Journey Through Fiction, History, and Faith

July 21 Books Read

Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

This delightful novel serves as a compelling follow-up to “The Royal We,” a lighthearted and thoroughly entertaining story about an American woman who unexpectedly falls in love with the prince next in line to the British throne. “Heir Affair” picks up immediately after their wedding, which, of course, didn’t go quite as smoothly as planned. The narrative delves into the complexities of navigating life as a new princess, covering everything from managing public perception to handling personal challenges like fertility and infertility issues within the royal spotlight. While it’s certainly not a book destined for literary awards (and does contain some language and adult themes), it offers a wonderfully fun and engaging escape. If you enjoy modern fairy tales with a dose of royal intrigue and realistic relationship hurdles, this is a perfect choice for a leisurely read.

The Neil Gaiman Reader by Neil Gaiman

Oh, where to begin with this epic collection! My husband, Brian, and I embarked on an incredible 27-hour audio journey through “The Neil Gaiman Reader.” This comprehensive anthology features 52 of Gaiman’s short stories, spanning his illustrious career from 1984 all the way to 2018, along with insightful excerpts from his longer works. We listened to this over the course of three months, making it our constant companion on car rides and road trips. Gaiman is an author we deeply admire on both an artistic and intellectual level. His writing is simply phenomenal; his characters are meticulously crafted and burst to life with every word, and his descriptions are nothing short of fantastical, showcasing an imagination that truly transcends the ordinary. A significant bonus is that we always prioritize listening to his audiobooks when he narrates them himself – his voice is truly fantastic and adds an unparalleled dimension to his already captivating stories.

It’s important to note that while we appreciate his artistry, not every piece he writes resonates with us entirely; some lean too heavily into horror or contain elements that I personally find distasteful. However, such instances are rare. Many of his short stories are profound and thought-provoking, often prompting deep reflection on themes of human nature, mythology, and the unseen forces that shape our lives. We genuinely enjoyed the vast majority of this reader. For those curious to dive into Neil Gaiman’s universe, I highly recommend starting where we did: with Neverwhere. It’s an accessible fantasy that beautifully illustrates why he has garnered such a passionate and widespread following.

Unashamed and Unshaken by Francine Rivers

These two novellas are the next installments in Francine Rivers’ beautiful “Lineage of Grace” series, which focuses on the remarkable women in the lineage of Jesus. Following “Unveiled,” which I read last month and explored the story of Tamar, “Unashamed” delves into the life of Rahab. Hers is a powerful narrative of a Canaanite prostitute in Jericho who, despite her circumstances, demonstrated incredible faith in the God of the Jews. Her courageous actions in aiding the Israelite spies are a testament to her belief, showcasing that faith can flourish even in unexpected places and amongst those not born into the covenant.

“Unshaken” then introduces us to Ruth, the Moabite daughter-in-law of Naomi. After tragic losses, Ruth makes the profound decision to leave her homeland and follow Naomi back to Bethlehem. Her unwavering loyalty and faith in Naomi’s God are deeply inspiring. She diligently follows Naomi’s counsel, eventually becoming the wife of Boaz and, significantly, securing her place in the family tree of Jesus. I absolutely adore how these two books vividly illustrate that faith transcends race, heritage, or gender. It’s belief that truly matters, demonstrating how these women, through their faith, were lovingly grafted into the family of God, forever changing their destinies and the course of history.

(A small word of caution: I listened to these during my morning routine, and I must admit, I might have enjoyed them more as traditional paper books. The narrator for all three novellas was SO. VERY. DRAMATIC. At times, it bordered on irritating, haha! It’s a personal preference, but something to consider if you’re an audiobook listener.)

War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

Last month, during an Audible BOGO sale, I stumbled upon an H.G. Wells compilation, and Brian and I decided to listen to “War of the Worlds” during a recent weekend trip. We were both familiar with Orson Welles’ iconic radio adaptation and had seen various movie versions, but immersing ourselves in the original story, penned in 1897, was truly mind-boggling. How on earth did Wells conceive of so many groundbreaking concepts that we now take for granted in science fiction? Aliens, tripod flying machines, devastating heat ray guns – it’s incredible to realize just how many fundamental elements of the sci-fi genre originated from his visionary mind. He truly was centuries ahead of his time!

We were also quite surprised by the sheer bleakness of the original narrative. It unflinchingly portrays the darker aspects of human nature under duress and dips into moments of genuine horror, particularly as the aliens are depicted consuming human blood for survival. These grittier, more disturbing details are often softened or omitted entirely in the adaptations we’ve encountered over the years. It was a stark reminder of the original story’s powerful and often unsettling themes.

Faithful by various authors

This inspiring collection features contributions from beloved singers and authors, including Amy Grant, Ginny Owens, Amanda Bible Williams, and Ruth Chou Simons. In “Faithful,” these influential voices explore the lives of women in the Bible, drawing out lessons of hope, encouragement, and the enduring power of community. It’s a relatively quick listen or read that offers genuinely interesting insights and spiritual inspiration. I believe there’s also an accompanying album of songs, which I haven’t had the chance to listen to yet, but it sounds like a beautiful complement to the written reflections.

Today, Tonight, Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon

This Young Adult (YA) novel centers on two high school senior rivals, both overachievers, whose relationship undergoes a complete transformation over a single 24-hour period on their last day of school. I picked this up expecting a classic hate-turns-to-love story, anticipating a fun and clean read, typical of many YA books. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. The narrative featured a rather cavalier attitude towards sex and an excessive use of expletives, which felt out of place given my expectations for the genre. The story itself was merely okay, populated with several cliched characters and lacking the fresh perspective I had hoped for. It serves as a reminder that even within a specific genre, content can vary widely.

The Duchess by Amanda Foreman

This is a substantial, yet utterly captivating, work of true history, not historical fiction. Amanda Foreman masterfully reconstructs the life of Lady Georgiana Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire, using an extensive collection of primary sources – newspapers, personal letters, and contemporary writings from the late 1700s and early 1800s. There were moments, given the sheer volume of names and places, where I found myself a little lost in the details, but the overarching story of Georgiana was every bit as fascinating as I had anticipated. As a history lover, I deeply appreciated the immersive sense it provides of how the immensely wealthy lived during that specific era. It’s a truly different world from our own, filled with elaborate social rituals, political intrigue, and personal dramas, all brought to life through Foreman’s meticulous research and compelling narrative.

On Screen: Our July Watching Highlights

Fatherhood (Kevin Hart) on Netflix

This movie, starring Kevin Hart, was a truly touching and impactful watch. While it begins with a profoundly difficult event, it beautifully unfolds to reveal the raw truth of parenting and the remarkable personal growth of the lead character as he navigates the challenges of becoming a father. It skillfully blends moments of genuine humor with bittersweet emotional depth, making it both heartwarming and thought-provoking. It’s a powerful portrayal of love, loss, and resilience.

Outside The Wire on Netflix

This action-packed film is set in a near-future dystopian world, following the story of a drone pilot who has only experienced military action from the detached perspective of his control console. His world is turned upside down when he’s thrust into the field, facing the harsh realities of combat firsthand. As an action movie (definitely a “Brian pick,” as he loves a good sci-fi thriller!), what truly captivated me was its underlying examination of the very real and personal cost of military conflict. It goes beyond explosions to explore the impact on the individuals involved, offering a deeper layer to the typical action genre.

The Olympics

And, of course, July wouldn’t be complete without tuning into the Olympics! The sheer athleticism and human spirit on display are always captivating. We particularly remember the men’s 400m hurdles – wasn’t that an incredibly exciting race? The determination and record-breaking performances are truly inspiring, reminding us of the incredible feats humans are capable of.
