The Persistent Trouble With Gophers: Our Ongoing Battle for a Gopher-Free Property

Gopher hills, evidence of persistent gopher activity

Dealing with gophers on our property has been a significant and ongoing challenge. These subterranean pests are far more than just a nuisance; they are incredibly destructive, capable of causing extensive damage to gardens, lawns, and even structural integrity through their elaborate tunneling systems. A single gopher can create multiple mounds per day, turning a pristine landscape into a moonscape overnight, and an entire colony can wreak havoc on an unimaginable scale.

Our experience has shown us just how relentless these creatures are. They devour roots, pull entire plants underground, and undermine the stability of paths and foundations. We’ve tried various deterrents and methods, from traps to homemade remedies, but often, the most effective solutions are the most costly. It’s a classic dilemma for many homeowners and gardeners: how do you combat a pervasive problem without breaking the bank? We’re constantly evaluating new strategies, weighing their efficacy against their expense, in our quest for a lasting solution.

For more detailed information on the extensive damage gophers can inflict and a range of tips for effective gopher eradication, I highly recommend checking out this informative article I mentioned in the podcast. It provides valuable insights into understanding gopher behavior and selecting appropriate control methods.

We are committed to sharing our journey and progress in tackling these persistent wildlife pests. Our ultimate goal is to reclaim our outdoor space, transforming what currently resembles a battleground of gopher mounds into a lush, weed-free pasture or lawn. The day we achieve a truly gopher-free property will be a triumphant one, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated every step of the way.

Farmhouse Updates: Restoring Historic Charm, One Wall at a Time

Finished exterior side of the farmhouse fixer project

Our farmhouse fixer project continues to make exciting strides, blending the practical necessities of renovation with the delightful process of restoring historical charm. We’re thrilled to report that one entire side of the two-story main section of the farmhouse is now beautifully finished and fully prepared to withstand the coming winter weather! This isn’t just about structural integrity; it’s about aesthetics too. The transformation has brought out the wonderfully authentic, old-house farmhouse character we envisioned, truly making it feel like it’s stepping back in time while being ready for the future.

To truly appreciate the extent of this transformation, we invite you to revisit the full exterior before tour here. It’s incredible to look back and see the “before” state, remembering the vision we had when we embarked on this ambitious project.

The journey to this point involved significant work, including the meticulous removal of the old vinyl siding. This was a crucial step in revealing the home’s original bones and character. Below, you can see what the house looked like immediately after we started tearing off that vinyl:

Removing vinyl siding from farmhouse, revealing original structure

While the image above shows the other side of the house, it perfectly illustrates the process, as both sides are mirror images. You can easily imagine the same painstaking work and dramatic revelation of the original siding happening on the now-finished section. Removing the vinyl siding not only improved the aesthetic appeal but also allowed us to address any underlying issues and properly insulate and protect the historical structure. It’s a testament to the dedication required in preserving and enhancing the beauty of older homes, ensuring they stand strong for generations to come while radiating their timeless charm.

What’s Cooking: The Art and Science of Recipe Adaptations

Foolproof Pickled Fermented Corn Relish, a delicious homemade recipe

The kitchen is often a place of creativity and experimentation, but it also demands precision, especially when it comes to certain culinary processes. A recent incident with Brian’s fermented corn relish brought this into sharp focus. He had deviated from the exact quantities, particularly with the red pepper flakes, leading to a noticeable difference from my version. This highlights a common misconception: while many recipes offer flexibility for substitutions and personal touches, others require strict adherence to achieve the desired outcome, and sometimes, for safety. You can find the precise, original recipe for our delicious fermented corn relish here, complete with the correct amounts, proving that even a recipe titled “foolproof” can go awry with a few unmeasured tweaks!

To illustrate the process and perhaps highlight where a misunderstanding might have occurred, here’s a video of me teaching Brian how to make this relish:

Let’s hope the fault doesn’t lie with the teacher, especially when fermentation involves a delicate balance! This experience serves as a perfect example of why understanding when to follow a recipe exactly is crucial. While general cooking, like many soups or stir-fries, allows for a good deal of improvisation based on taste and available ingredients, there are critical categories where precision is paramount. These are not merely suggestions but foundational rules that ensure both success and safety.

Here are the primary categories where you absolutely should follow the recipe precisely, without making significant changes:

  • Boiling Water Canning Recipes: When it comes to canning, safety is non-negotiable. These recipes are scientifically tested to ensure proper acidity levels and processing times, which are critical for preventing the growth of harmful bacteria like Clostridium botulinum. Altering ingredients or proportions can change the pH, rendering the food unsafe for preservation.
  • Bread Recipes: Baking is often referred to as a science, and for good reason. The ratios of flour, yeast, liquid, and other ingredients directly impact the dough’s texture, rise, and overall structure. Small changes can drastically alter the gluten development, yeast activity, and moisture content, leading to a dense, crumbly, or otherwise unsuccessful loaf.
  • Cake & Similar Dessert Recipes: Similar to bread, cakes and other baked desserts rely on precise measurements for chemical reactions to occur correctly. The balance of leavening agents, fats, sugars, and flours determines the final texture, moisture, and rise. Deviating can result in a flat, dry, or overly dense dessert that misses the mark entirely.

And speaking of delicious, easy-to-make dishes, we’ve got a fantastic recipe for homemade tomato soup that is incredibly flavorful and simple to prepare. However, it’s important to note that this particular recipe for yummy homemade tomato soup is not designed or safe for traditional boiling water canning due to its composition. It’s best enjoyed fresh or preserved through freezing for later consumption.

We’d love to hear from you! Have you experienced any memorable or funny recipe failures when you’ve tried to adapt them, perhaps learning a valuable lesson about culinary precision in the process?

This is Really Cool! Practical Discoveries and Timeless Classics

HiYa App icon, a phone app for blocking robocalls

In this segment, we share a couple of discoveries that have either made our lives a little easier or enriched our minds:

Brian’s Pick: The Hiya phone app. In an age where robocalls and spam calls are a constant irritation, Hiya stands out as a powerful tool. This app is designed to track, identify, and significantly reduce — or even entirely block — unwanted calls on your phone. It leverages a vast database to identify suspicious numbers, helping you avoid scams and interruptions, thereby restoring a bit of peace to your daily life. It’s a genuine game-changer for anyone tired of constant unsolicited calls.

Middlemarch audiobook cover, a classic novel by George Eliot
Jami’s Pick: Middlemarch by George Eliot. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the audiobook version of this profound 200-year-old classic novel. What makes it so captivating isn’t just Eliot’s masterful storytelling and intricate character development, but how remarkably relevant its themes remain even today. The novel explores complex issues of marriage, social expectations, intellectual ambition, and the provincial life of Victorian England, all of which resonate deeply with contemporary challenges and human experiences. It’s a reminder that fundamental human nature and societal dynamics, despite technological advances, often remain unchanged.
