Experiencing Austin: Accommodation, Culture, and Unique Sights

Rooms at The Guild Red River District apartment

Our Austin adventure began with a stay at The Guild Red River, an experience that truly redefined our perception of travel accommodation. Opting for a spacious apartment instead of a traditional hotel room proved to be an excellent decision. For just a few dollars more than a standard mid-priced downtown hotel – and even more affordable than many Airbnbs in the vicinity – we enjoyed the unparalleled comfort and convenience of a fully-equipped apartment. This choice was incredibly worthwhile for our week-long stay, offering us the flexibility and space rarely found in typical hotel settings.

The Guild’s innovative concept of premium, apartment-style living is expanding, with properties now available in Dallas and Miami, in addition to several locations across Austin. We were thoroughly impressed by this blend of hotel services and residential comfort, making it an ideal choice for both short and extended stays in dynamic urban environments.

The Vibrant Pulse of Austin’s Red River Cultural District

Buildings in Austin Red River District

Austin is a city of captivating contrasts, where the rustic charm of old West storefronts and homes crafted from native white limestone beautifully coexists with sleek, modern high-rise buildings. This architectural tapestry reflects Austin’s unique spirit – a blend of tradition and innovation. The photograph above captures a slice of 6th Street, the energetic core of the Red River Cultural District. This district is renowned for its dense concentration of bars, complemented by an eclectic mix of tattoo parlors and diverse restaurants, all contributing to its vibrant, bohemian atmosphere.

While weekend nights transform 6th Street into a bustling hub of live music and convivial crowds, the district adopts a surprisingly serene pace during the rest of the week, offering a different, quieter charm for explorers. Our stay here provided an authentic glimpse into the city’s dynamic pulse.

Flagship Whole Foods store in downtown Austin

One of the practical benefits of our apartment stay was the ability to prepare some of our meals, significantly reducing our dining expenses. A pleasant hike led us to the flagship Whole Foods Market in downtown Austin, the closest source for fresh produce and gourmet ingredients. We stocked up on essentials like cereal, milk, a variety of vegetables, hummus, crackers, chips, salsa, cheese, and fresh fruit. This allowed us to enjoy leisurely breakfasts and lunches in our apartment. We even got creative one evening, transforming our lunch salads into a delicious homemade nacho dinner, proving that apartment living in Austin offers both comfort and cost savings for discerning travelers.

There are two additional fascinating aspects of Austin that we unfortunately didn’t have a chance to discuss during our live podcast recording, but are definitely worth highlighting for anyone planning a visit:

The Phenomenal Austin Bat Colony

People watching and bats flying in Austin TX

First, and perhaps most famously, are the Austin bats. This incredible phenomenon boasts the largest urban bat colony in North America. During the peak season, typically mid-summer when new pups are born, the colony can swell to an astounding number exceeding one million Mexican free-tailed bats. These magnificent creatures make their home beneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, which spans the Colorado River in downtown Austin, from March through the fall months before they embark on their migration south.

While we didn’t specifically set out to watch them, a casual stroll along the river path led us to a burgeoning crowd gathered along the bridge. Naturally, we paused to witness the spectacle. The upper photograph above vividly illustrates the throngs of people lining the bridge, often arriving more than an hour before dusk in anticipation of the bats’ dramatic emergence. An hour for bats! It’s a testament to the colony’s allure.

Our March visit meant fewer bats were present, as depicted in the lower photo captured by my phone camera – merely a faint gray line against the fading sky. Nevertheless, the experience of being part of the crowd, witnessing this unique natural event unfold in an urban setting, was truly memorable. We hoped those who invested in river boat tours had an even better view of the majestic exodus.

Touring the Historic Texas State Capitol

Austin Capitol Dome Inside

The second essential Austin attraction we explored was the magnificent Texas State Capitol. Conveniently located just a few blocks from our downtown accommodation, this iconic landmark offers far more than just a legislative building. Its sprawling 22-acre grounds are an attraction in themselves, featuring beautifully landscaped walking paths dotted with impressive statues and monuments that narrate Texas’ rich history.

The Capitol building itself is nothing short of spectacular. Its stunning architecture, constructed from distinctive sunset red granite, is a sight to behold. The absolute highlight of our tour was undoubtedly the awe-inspiring dome, visible in the photograph above. The intricate woodwork, the meticulous attention to detail in every carving and inlay – it evokes a profound sense of craftsmanship and historical grandeur. We were also privileged to visit the senate and house chambers, which are still actively used today. It’s truly incredible to imagine public servants working daily surrounded by such a tangible sense of history and legacy.

Austin’s reputation as a food destination is well-deserved, offering an incredible array of flavors from classic Texan barbecue to innovative Tex-Mex and beyond. Here’s a rundown of the fantastic establishments where we dined, each offering a unique taste of the city:

  • Stubbs BBQ: Located conveniently next door to our accommodation, Stubbs is not just a restaurant; it’s an institution. Famous for being the birthplace of their legendary BBQ sauce, the food here is genuinely exceptional. Beyond the mouth-watering brisket, ribs, and classic sides, Stubbs is a celebrated live music venue, boasting an impressive history of hosting famous country musicians, whose posters adorn its walls. It’s a must-visit for both food and music enthusiasts.

  • Pelon’s Tex-Mex: For an authentic taste of Tex-Mex, Pelon’s is a fantastic choice, particularly renowned for its famous queso and delicious tacos. The vibrant atmosphere is perfectly complemented by its outdoor seating options; definitely choose to sit outside if the weather permits for a truly enjoyable dining experience.

  • Joe’s Bakery & Mexican Food: We eagerly walked over a mile each way to reach Joe’s, and it was undeniably worth every step! This beloved establishment is celebrated for its authentic Tex-Mex breakfast and lunch offerings. Even on a Thursday morning, the place was bustling with locals, a clear indicator of its widespread popularity and consistently excellent food. Don’t miss their breakfast tacos!

  • Eureka! Scratch Kitchen: A modern brew pub, Eureka! impresses with its elevated take on classic pub food, especially its exceptional burgers. Brian raved about his burger featuring bone marrow butter, describing it as nothing short of amazing. It’s a great spot for craft beers and creative culinary twists.

And one more culinary gem that we didn’t manage to squeeze into the podcast recording, but absolutely deserves a mention:

  • Texas Chili Parlor: If you’re seeking a true local dive-bar atmosphere paired with outstanding food, look no further. This spot serves up terrific Texas-style chili (which, by tradition, means no beans!) available in three distinct heat levels to suit any palate. The prices are also remarkably reasonable, making it a favorite for authentic, hearty comfort food.

Essential Travel Gear & More!

This is Really Cool! Our Top Travel Item Recommendations

Through countless trips, we’ve identified certain travel items that make a significant difference in comfort and convenience. Here are a couple of our current favorites:

  • Brian’s Pick: Super Lightweight Delsey Spinner Suitcase – Originally a fantastic find from Costco, though that particular model is no longer available, the convenience of a lightweight spinner suitcase cannot be overstated. For those seeking similar functionality and quality, this Delsey carry-on from the same reputable company offers excellent maneuverability and durability, making airport navigation a breeze. Investing in a good spinner suitcase protects your back and makes travel much more enjoyable.
  • Jami’s Pick: Anker PowerCore+ Mini Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger – This tiny powerhouse, available via Amazon, is an absolute lifesaver for any traveler. We’ve encountered numerous situations, especially on smaller airplanes, where charging ports are non-existent. This compact, lipstick-sized charger ensures your essential devices, like smartphones, stay powered throughout long travel days, preventing the dreaded low-battery anxiety. It’s a small item with immense utility.
