The challenge lies in condensing intricate plots, complex character developments, and often internal monologues into a visual narrative, all while managing audience expectations forged by their own imaginations. Here, we delve into some of the most memorable – both good and bad – that have graced our screens.

The Good Adaptations: When Movies Get It Right

These films managed to not only capture the spirit of their books but, in some cases, even enhanced the experience. They prove that with careful direction, strong performances, and respect for the source material, a book can truly shine on screen.

• Sense & Sensibility: Jane Austen’s works are frequently adapted, and thankfully, they are often handled with the reverence they deserve. This adaptation, in particular, is a masterclass in period drama, bringing the Dashwood sisters’ emotional journey and society’s strictures to vibrant life. Many other Jane Austen adaptations also fall into this category, proving that classic literature can indeed translate beautifully when the creative team doesn’t “mess with a classic author.”
• A Christmas Carol (animated version): Dickens’ timeless tale of redemption gets a truly enchanting animated treatment here. It captures the spooky yet heartfelt essence of the original, making it a perfect holiday watch for all ages.

These films serve as cautionary tales, demonstrating how even the most brilliant books can be diminished or fundamentally misunderstood in their cinematic forms. We strongly encourage you to pick up the original novels to experience these stories as they were truly meant to be told.

• The Firm: John Grisham’s legal thrillers are known for their intricate plots and suspense. While the movie wasn’t entirely unwatchable, it significantly streamlined and altered key plot points, losing much of the book’s cleverness and tension.
• Troy (from The Iliad): Adapting Homer’s epic poem is an immense undertaking, but this film stripped away the mythological depth, divine intervention, and complex character motivations that make The Iliad so timeless. It became a generic historical action flick rather than a profound exploration of war and fate.
• Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil: This true-crime non-fiction book is a vivid, quirky, and atmospheric portrait of Savannah. The movie, despite a talented cast, struggled to capture the unique eccentricities and slow-burn charm of the city and its inhabitants, feeling disjointed and superficial.
• Under The Tuscan Sun: The memoir is a delightful journey of self-discovery, renovation, and embracing Italian life. The film, while visually appealing, took significant liberties with the narrative, adding romantic subplots and altering the protagonist’s journey in ways that felt inauthentic to the book’s reflective and personal tone.
• Ready Player One: Ernest Cline’s novel is a love letter to 80s pop culture and a thrilling adventure within a virtual world. While the movie delivered on visual spectacle, it drastically simplified the intricate puzzles, character development, and emotional stakes, reducing it to a fast-paced but less satisfying scavenger hunt.
• How The Grinch Stole Christmas: We know this live-action movie is a favorite for many, but for us, it just added too much and often felt creepy. Dr. Seuss’s original story is short, sweet, and perfectly conveys its message with simple elegance. The film’s expansion often lost that charm, substituting it with unnecessary backstory and exaggerated humor that missed the original’s gentle heart.

And the book we’re eagerly looking forward to seeing on the screen (with fingers crossed for a faithful adaptation!): Red Rising by Pierce Brown – a sprawling, epic sci-fi series that deserves a truly ambitious and respectful translation.

Farmhouse Remodel Updates: Preserving History, Building Dreams

The journey of restoring our farmhouse continues to be a blend of rewarding discoveries and unexpected challenges. Each day brings us closer to realizing the vision we have for this historic home, blending its original charm with modern comforts. We’ve been making significant progress, and there are some exciting updates to share.

I recently shared this fascinating photo with our loyal AOC newsletter readers (sign up here to get exclusive behind-the-scenes content like this!), and I thought it was too good not to share here as well, especially since we discussed the siding in our latest updates. This image beautifully illustrates where we’ve been fortunate enough to salvage the original old-growth fir siding, a true testament to the quality and craftsmanship of yesteryear. You can clearly see the distinct line where the original siding transitions to where we’ll be adding new board-and-batten. This intentional design choice allows us to preserve the historical integrity of the existing structure while seamlessly integrating new, complementary elements. The board-and-batten will continue gracefully around the back of the house, encompassing the new bump-out addition, and extend onto the other side, reaching up to the second-story section. This blend of old and new will create a cohesive and charming farmhouse aesthetic.

One detail that fills me with immense joy, which I haven’t mentioned much, is the house’s original color. This farmhouse has always been white – isn’t that just wonderful? I’ve always dreamt of living in an all-white farmhouse, and it feels incredibly serendipitous that we’re helping this house reclaim and embody its true, intended character. It’s more than just a renovation; it’s a restoration of identity. We also celebrated a significant milestone recently: our permit was finally issued (yay!), allowing us to move forward with the next phases of construction with full legal blessing. On a slightly less celebratory note, we’re still locked in a seemingly endless battle with gophers in the garden (boo!), a constant reminder that even dream homes come with their own unique set of persistent, burrowing challenges.
