How to Start Listening to An Oregon Cottage Podcast (or any podcast)
First, what exactly is a podcast?
In essence, a podcast is an on-demand audio program, much like talk radio, but with the incredible advantage of complete listener control. Unlike traditional radio, you decide precisely what you want to listen to and when it best suits your schedule. This flexibility makes podcasts an incredibly powerful tool for learning, entertainment, and inspiration, fitting seamlessly into various aspects of daily life. They come in an astonishing array of genres and formats, from humorous storytelling and in-depth news analysis to business strategies, personal development, family guidance, and, of course, topics like simple living, DIY, and real food, as we offer here at An Oregon Cottage. The beauty of podcasts lies in their diversity and accessibility, catering to virtually any interest imaginable.
I find podcasts to be an excellent companion during activities where my hands are busy but my mind is free. Personally, I love listening to my favorite shows while tending to my garden, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, or during our weekly family cleaning night—a time when a good podcast truly makes the work fly by! It’s a fantastic way to utilize otherwise solitary time productively or entertainingly. Many others integrate podcasts into their routines similarly: during daily commutes, while exercising, or as they tackle household projects like painting furniture or organizing. The convenience of learning or being entertained while engaged in other activities is a major draw, allowing you to absorb valuable content without needing to carve out dedicated screen time.
Okay, so how do you actually listen to them?
For many Apple users, the easiest method is through the iTunes Podcasts app, which comes pre-installed on iPhones and iPads. Its intuitive design makes it a natural starting point for discovering and managing your favorite shows. The app icon is distinctive and easy to spot:

Here’s a quick, step-by-step tutorial to use the Apple Podcasts app to find and subscribe to An Oregon Cottage Podcast, ensuring you never miss an episode focused on simple living, DIY, and real food:
1. Locate and tap the purple Podcasts icon (the same one pictured above) on your device’s home screen to launch the application. This is your gateway to a world of audio content.

2. In the bottom-right corner of the screen, you’ll see a magnifying glass icon. Tap this to access the Search function. This allows you to look for specific podcasts, topics, or hosts.
3. In the search bar that appears at the top of the screen, type “An Oregon Cottage Podcast” precisely. This will help the app locate our show among the vast library of available podcasts.
4. From the search results screen, locate and tap the prominent “An Oregon Cottage Podcast” icon, typically featuring our picture or logo. This will take you directly to our dedicated podcast page within the app.

5. Once you’re on our podcast page (as seen in the screenshot above), press the “Subscribe” button. Subscribing is crucial because it ensures that all our new episodes will automatically appear in your “Library” or “My Podcasts” section, making it effortless to keep up with our latest content on simple living, gardening, and DIY. From this page, you can also click on any listed episode to begin playing it immediately.
6. To view and play all the episodes you haven’t yet listened to from any of your subscribed podcasts, tap the “Unplayed” icon located in the bottom-left corner of the screen. This section conveniently aggregates new content, so you can simply click on the episode you wish to hear, and it will start playing instantly.
A helpful note: Your device can be configured to automatically download the most recent episode of any podcast you’re subscribed to. This setting can usually be managed within your phone’s general settings or directly within the Podcasts app. However, you always retain control over what downloads to your device. Look for the download icon (often depicted as a cloud with a downward arrow) next to each episode. Tapping this icon allows you to manually download specific episodes. This is particularly useful for offline listening, ensuring you can enjoy our podcast even without a Wi-Fi connection, saving your mobile data for other uses.
What about Downloading and Storage?

When I first ventured into podcasts, a common concern was how they might consume my phone’s storage with numerous downloaded episodes. Thankfully, podcast apps offer robust settings to manage this effectively. You can configure your phone to suit your preferences precisely: choose not to download anything automatically, opt to only download the most recent episode, or select to download all unplayed episodes from your subscriptions. In the screenshot provided, you can see my personal preference is set to automatically download only the most recent episode, striking a balance between convenience and storage management.
For the greatest control over your device’s storage and data usage, you can set automatic downloads to ‘off’. This allows you to manually select and download only the episodes you truly want to save for offline listening, using the cloud/arrow button next to each episode. This method ensures you have full command over what occupies your precious device space.

Furthermore, one feature that truly alleviated my storage worries is the option to automatically delete played episodes! By simply activating this setting (typically by toggling a button to show green, as illustrated in the screenshot above), episodes you’ve finished listening to will be automatically removed from your device. This hands-free management ensures your phone’s storage remains uncluttered, ready for new simple living, DIY, and real food content from An Oregon Cottage.
What other ways can I listen to An Oregon Cottage Podcast?
