Easy DIY Book Page Banners: Craft Timeless, Customizable Seasonal Decor
Transform humble old book pages into charming and unique seasonal decorations in mere minutes! This simple DIY craft requires only basic supplies and adds a personal, vintage touch to any space, proving that impactful decor doesn’t have to be complicated or costly.

As I recently refreshed our sideboard for the autumn season – a spot I somewhat overlooked during the fall home tour, despite it holding a trove of my favorite fall items – I found myself showcasing these sweet and effortlessly charming seasonal book page banners. It suddenly struck me that I’ve never shared the incredibly quick tutorial for creating them with all of you!
If you’ve been a long-time reader of An Oregon Cottage (AOC), you might recognize these delightful homemade banners gracing various mantels in my previous seasonal decor setups. What many don’t realize is just how little time it takes to bring these beautiful pieces to life. We’re talking about a craft project that can be completed in mere minutes, yet yields results that look as though they took hours of meticulous effort.
The best part? When guests admire your unique, vintage-inspired decor, you can simply smile, graciously accept their compliments, all the while knowing you spent less time crafting it than it would take to drive to a store and search for something similar (and likely overpriced!). This is precisely the kind of DIY craft I champion: quick, easy, affordable, and incredibly impactful.

Book page banners have become one of my absolute favorite go-to decorating staples for several compelling reasons. Their vintage charm adds a touch of nostalgia and warmth to any room, making them a perfect fit for a variety of decor styles, from farmhouse to shabby chic, rustic, or even minimalist. They are incredibly versatile, allowing you to customize them with any message for any season, holiday, or special event. Whether you’re celebrating spring, gearing up for fall, or hosting a birthday party, these banners adapt beautifully.
These customizable banners can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire. You can leave them unadorned for a clean, classic look, or dress them up with lace, a sprinkle of glitter, rustic burlap accents, or other fabric scraps to match your specific theme. They are also a fantastic craft project for kids, making it a wonderful family activity to prepare for upcoming celebrations or to simply add a touch of handmade charm to your home.
This year, for our autumn display, I’ve chosen to feature the “Fall” banner on our sideboard. I’ve paired it with one of my proudest gardening achievements: a beautiful Jarrahdale pumpkin that I grew myself. To complement the decor, I’ve added some drying PeeGee hydrangeas, which wonderfully coordinate with the hydrangea-filled DIY barn wood trough on our dining table. The display is rounded out with a charming Pottery Barn-inspired scripted decoupaged pumpkin that I crafted, alongside a few adorable Baby Boo pumpkins. To introduce some texture and break up the expanse of white, I layered a linen runner, creating a cozy and inviting vignette. Isn’t it intriguing how the crispness of fall inspires us to layer and add warmth after a summer of desiring clean, airy spaces?
Craft Your Own Simple Seasonal Book Page Banners

Creating your own book page banner is a straightforward and rewarding process. The beauty lies in its simplicity and the ability to personalize every detail to perfectly suit your style and current decor needs. Whether you’re aiming for a rustic, vintage, or elegantly understated look, these banners are a perfect canvas for your creativity. Let’s gather our supplies and get started on this enjoyable DIY project!
Supplies You’ll Need
One of the many advantages of this craft is that it requires very few specialized items. Most of these supplies you might already have around your house, making this an incredibly budget-friendly endeavor:
- Old book pages: Source these from a discarded book. The slightly yellowed, aged pages (mine were approximately 5 1/2″ x 8″) lend a wonderful vintage aesthetic. Thrift stores are excellent places to find old books for a minimal cost.
- Ruler, pencil & scissors: Essential tools for accurate measuring and clean cuts.
- Alphabet stencil (or large enough stickers): To ensure clear, uniform lettering. If you prefer a more organic look, you can freehand your letters, or for ultimate precision, consider using a cutting machine like a Cricut or Silhouette.
- Sharpie or other fine-tipped marker: For tracing and filling in your letters. A black marker provides a classic, high-contrast look, but feel free to experiment with other colors to match your theme.
- Hole punch: To create openings for threading your banner.
- Jute twine or ribbon: The material to string your banner pieces together. Jute twine offers a rustic feel, while ribbon can add a touch of elegance or color.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Your DIY Book Page Banner
Follow these easy steps to create your custom seasonal book page banner. Remember, accuracy in the first few steps will ensure a beautifully uniform finished product.
- Create Your Template: Begin by taking one of your old book pages. Using a ruler, find and mark the exact center point at the bottom edge of the page. From this center mark, use your ruler to draw a straight line upwards to each of the top corners of the page. This will form a perfect triangle. Carefully cut out this triangle; this piece will serve as your reusable template for all subsequent banner flags. This precise first step ensures all your banner pieces will be consistent in shape and size.
- Cut Out Banner Flags: Lay your newly created triangle template on top of 2 or 3 stacked book pages. Hold them firmly together and use your scissors to cut around the template, creating multiple identical triangular flags simultaneously. Repeat this process until you have enough triangles for each letter of your desired banner message, plus any additional blank flags you might want to add for spacing or decoration.
- Trace Your Letters: With a pencil, carefully trace one letter onto each triangle using your chosen alphabet stencil. Ensure the letter is centered and positioned attractively on the flag. Repeat this for every letter required for your banner message. If you’re confident in your freehand lettering, you can skip the stencil, but tracing helps maintain uniformity, especially for longer words.
- Fill In Your Letters: Using your Sharpie or other fine-tipped marker, meticulously fill in each traced letter. Take your time to achieve clean, crisp lines. A useful tip: if you’re using a permanent marker, place a scrap piece of paper underneath each triangle as you color. This will catch any potential marker bleed-through and protect your work surface or other banner pieces. For a different effect, you could also use paint pens, watercolors, or even colored pencils.
- Punch Holes for Hanging: Once your letters are dry, take your hole punch. Create two holes at the top of each triangle. Aim for consistency by placing them approximately an inch in from each top corner and about 3/4″ down from the top edge. Consistent hole placement ensures your banner hangs evenly and beautifully.
- Thread Your Banner: Cut a piece of jute twine or ribbon that is long enough to accommodate your entire banner message, plus extra length on each end for hanging. Carefully thread your decorated triangles onto the twine in the correct order, spelling out your desired word or phrase. Experiment with spacing between each letter to achieve the look you prefer. You can tie small knots on either side of each banner flag to keep them in place, or simply let them slide freely for a more relaxed appearance.
- Display Your Masterpiece: Use push pins, small nails, or even clear command hooks to hang your finished book page banner in its desired location. If you’re using it temporarily, such as for a birthday party, strong tape can also work wonders. Consider where the banner will have the most impact – a mantel, a wall, a doorway, or even strung across a window.
