I’m absolutely thrilled to share this fantastic handmade gift idea: charming knitted cabled headbands elegantly wrapped with our custom printable gift labels. Why is this project so special? Because it perfectly embodies my favorite kind of gift: it’s quick to create, inherently beautiful, and incredibly practical. These stylish ear warmers are universally loved, suiting everyone from young girls to adult women on your gift list.

In fact, I crafted several of these last year for my daughter and her cousins, and they were an instant hit! They look incredibly cute when worn, providing a snug and cozy solution for keeping ears warm during those chilly winter months or cool autumn evenings. The simple elegance of the cable knit adds a touch of sophistication that truly elevates the accessory.

While the knitting pattern itself isn’t my original creation (it’s a wonderful free pattern I’ll link to further down), I was so captivated by its simplicity and charm that I knew I had to enhance the gifting experience. That’s why I designed these unique printable labels, creating the perfect finishing touch to accompany this exceptional pattern and transform your hand-knitted item into a truly memorable present.

And if the thought of knitting cables seems daunting, please don’t let it discourage you – I completely understand that feeling! I was quite apprehensive about attempting cables myself. This project actually marked my very first foray into cable knitting. However, once you get the hang of it, you’ll discover how straightforward and enjoyable it is. To ensure your success, I’ve included a detailed photo tutorial below, designed to walk you through each step of the cabling process with confidence. You’ll be branching out to more complex cable patterns in no time!

Adding a thoughtfully designed label to a handmade gift significantly elevates its perceived value, lending it a polished and professional look. It transforms a lovely handmade item into something that feels like a ‘real’ boutique-quality present, if you know what I mean. This small detail truly makes a big difference in how the gift is received and appreciated.

Beyond aesthetics, a label can serve a practical purpose. It can clearly identify what the recipient is holding – for instance, without a label, these stylish knitted boot toppers might not be immediately recognized. Furthermore, labels can provide essential instructions, such as care details or how to use the item, much like these informative tags for Flaxseed Warming Pillows. They add a layer of functionality and thoughtfulness that truly enhances the gifting experience.

Mastering Easy Cable Headbands: A Step-by-Step Tutorial for Your Printable Gift Labels

For those new to cable knitting, or even those just looking for a refresher, I’m going to begin with a detailed picture tutorial. My goal is to clearly illustrate just how simple it is to create the beautiful cables for these headbands. Please note, however, that breaking down the process into step-by-step photos can sometimes make it appear more complex than it truly is! If you’re comfortable with basic knit and purl stitches, you absolutely have the skills to make cables – and this pattern is an ideal starting point, as it requires minimal counting.

Following this comprehensive picture tutorial, you’ll find a link to the free knitting pattern itself, alongside a helpful video walkthrough. This combination of resources is designed to ensure you feel entirely confident and empowered to try this project. Seriously, if I can learn to knit cables, anyone can!

Step 1: Preparing for Your First Cable Twist (Corresponding to Row 3 of the Pattern)

  • Begin by knitting one stitch. For smooth and enjoyable knitting, I highly recommend Knit Picks Options Interchangeable Needles. I absolutely adore them because they eliminate the hassle of straight needle ends flapping around and are incredibly convenient for knitting on the go, easily fitting into any bag.
  • Next, carefully slip the following three stitches onto a small 6-inch bamboo double-pointed needle. Position this needle in FRONT of your headband project. This small needle will hold these stitches temporarily while you knit others.
  • Note: While I prefer double-pointed needles for their versatility, you can also use more traditional metal cable needles or indented wood cable needles. My preference for double-pointed needles stems from the fact that I either already have them on hand, or they can be used for a variety of other patterns in different sizes, unlike single-use cable needles.

Step 2: Knitting Behind the Cable Needle

  • Now, pick up your main knitting needle and resume knitting the stitches from the main row, working *behind* the small bamboo needle that is holding your slipped stitches.
  • Yes, this part might feel a little tight and somewhat awkward initially, especially for beginners. Don’t worry, it quickly becomes second nature with a bit of practice. This is precisely why using a bamboo needle is so beneficial: its slightly grippy surface holds onto the wool yarn more securely, preventing the stitches from sliding off easily, which can often happen with smoother metal needles. Keep a steady tension and take your time.

Step 3: Knitting the Next Section

  • With your main knitting needle, knit three stitches from the main row. These are the stitches immediately following the gap created by slipping the stitches onto your cable needle. You are essentially working across the row, skipping over the held stitches for now. This creates the ‘crossing’ effect that defines a cable.

Step 4: Knitting the Slipped Stitches

  • Now, carefully slide the three stitches that are on your bamboo needle to its right end. You may need to gently twist the bamboo needle a bit to orient the stitches correctly, making it easier to knit them.
  • Insert your main knitting needle into these three stitches and knit them off of the bamboo needle. This step completes the cable twist, bringing the formerly slipped stitches to the front of your work. The key is to ensure an even tension to keep the cable looking neat and defined.

Step 5: Finishing the Row

  • Once you’ve knit all three stitches off the bamboo needle, you can set the short needle aside. You’ve successfully created your first cable!
  • Now, simply continue knitting the rest of the row as you normally would according to the pattern instructions. This typically involves knitting or purling the remaining stitches until you reach the end of the row. Take a moment to admire your work – you’ve just mastered a basic cable!

Step 6: Creating the Left-Side Cable (Corresponding to Row 7 of the Pattern)

  • Continue knitting or purling according to the pattern until you reach the next row that requires a cable, specifically the left-side cable (which is typically Row 7 at the beginning of the pattern).
  • Knit seven stitches as specified by the pattern. Then, just like before, slip the next three stitches onto your bamboo needle. This time, however, leave the bamboo needle at the BACK of the headband. This crucial difference creates the opposite direction of the cable twist.
  • With your main needles, knit three stitches from the main row, leaving just one stitch on your main needle at this point.
  • Helpful TIP: To prevent the remaining stitch from falling off your main needle while you manage the cable needle, pull the needle up so that the stitch is further down the needle shaft, or safely on the cable itself if you’re using interchangeable needles. This small maneuver can save you from dropped stitches!

Step 7: Knitting the Slipped Stitches for the Left Cable

  • Similar to Step 4, gently slide the three stitches on the bamboo needle towards its right end. Now, bring the bamboo needle forward so that its stitches are accessible.
  • Using your main knitting needle, knit these three stitches off of the bamboo needle. This action brings the back stitches to the front, completing the left-crossing cable. Maintain even tension to ensure a consistent and attractive cable pattern.

Step 8: Completing the Row and Continuing the Pattern

  • After knitting the three stitches from the bamboo needle, knit the final stitch remaining on your main needle. This completes the left-side cable and brings you to the end of the row.

And there you have it! Continue following the pattern, repeating these cable steps as directed. With each repetition, you’ll see the beautiful, intricate cable pattern emerge. Before you know it, you’ll have knitted a gorgeous cabled headband ear warmer!

One of the best features of this particular pattern is its speed. By utilizing bulky yarn and size 11 needles, as recommended, these headbands knit up surprisingly quickly. Even as someone who doesn’t consider myself a fast knitter, I found I could comfortably complete one headband over just a couple of evenings while enjoying some TV. This makes it an ideal project for last-minute gifts or for batch-knitting multiple items for friends and family.

Free Printable Gift Labels for Easy Knitted Cable Headbands {+ Cable Tutorial}

Free printable gift labels for cable headbands to wrap around these quick-knitted ear warmers for a great handmade gift option for girls of all ages.
Author: Jami Boys

Tools

  • Knitting needles size US 11 – 8.0 mm
  • Printer

Materials

  • 80-90 yds Bulky (7 wpi) weight yarn

Instructions

  • (On a knit row, cable row, according to pattern- row 3 at beginning of pattern)Knit one stitch (I knit everything now on Knit Picks Options Interchangeable Needles – I LOVE them, no ends of straight needles flapping around and easy to carry with you in a bag.)Slip next three stitches onto a small 6-inch bamboo double-pointed needle in FRONT of headband. Note: you can also try these more traditional cable needles or these indented wood cable needles. I like using the double-pointed needles because I either have them or can use new sizes in other patterns (vs. one-use cable needles).
Knitted cable ear warmer headband step1
  • Pick up knitting behind the bamboo needle on the main row. Yes it’s tight and a bit awkward, but it becomes second nature after awhile. This is why a bamboo needle helps – it’s surface grabs the wool yard so it doesn’t slide off as easily as metal would.
Knitted cable ear warmer headband step2
  • Knit 3 stitches on the main row.
Knitted cable ear warmer headband step3
  • Slide the 3 stitches on the bamboo needle to the right end and twist a bit so you can start knitting the 3 stitches from the bamboo needle to the main needle.Knit all stitches off of the bamboo needle.
Knitted cable ear warmer headband step4
  • Set the short needle aside and finish knitting the row regularly.
Knitted cable ear warmer headband step5
  • Continue with the pattern until you come to the next row needing the left side cable (row 7 at beginning of pattern).Knit 7 stitches before slipping the next 3 stitches onto the bamboo needle, this time leaving the needle at the BACK of the headband. With your main needles, knit 3, leaving just one stitch on your main needle. TIP: pull the needle up so the stitch is down the needle (or on the cable if using the interchangeable needles) to keep the needle from falling out.
Knitted cable ear warmer headband step7
  • Like before, slide the stitches to the right, bringing the bamboo needle forward to be able to knit the stitches off of the bamboo needle.
Knitted cable ear warmer headband step8
  • Knit the final stitch with the main needles.

  • Continue the pattern, repeating the cable steps accordingly. And ta-da! You’ve knitted a cabled headband ear warmer!

Using the bulky yarn and size 11 needles called for in the pattern makes the headbands knit up quickly, too. I found I could finish one in a couple nights of TV watching – and I’m not a fast knitter at all.
