Curated Spring Display

Embrace Spring: Create Your Own Eclectic & Vibrant Mantel with DIY Decor Ideas

As the days grow longer and the first whispers of spring begin to fill the air, many of us find ourselves eagerly anticipating the shift from cold, gray winter days to the vibrant energy of the new season. There’s something undeniably refreshing about shedding the layers of winter and inviting the warmth and color of spring into our homes. This year, I’m particularly excited to usher in the season with a cheerful and entirely unique spring mantel display. It’s a chance to wave goodbye to the last vestiges of winter’s chill and wholeheartedly welcome the sunshine, the blossoming flowers, and the renewed sense of life that spring brings.

Decorating your mantelpiece is a fantastic way to celebrate seasonal changes and infuse your living space with a fresh new look. For this particular spring transformation, I’ve adopted an approach I affectionately call “eclectic.” This simply means I’ve gathered a delightful assortment of items from around the house, crafted a charming banner, incorporated a few subtle Easter-themed touches, and layered in an abundance of greenery and flowers. The result? An Eclectic Spring Mantel that’s full of personality, unexpected pairings, and undeniable charm. It’s a testament to the idea that decorating can be a playful process, allowing you to combine whatever catches your eye to create a truly personalized statement.

The Art of Eclectic Spring Decorating

The beauty of an “eclectic” decorating style lies in its freedom. It’s not about adhering to strict rules or matching everything perfectly; rather, it’s about thoughtfully combining diverse elements, textures, and colors to create a cohesive yet visually interesting display. Think of it as telling a story with your decor – each piece adds a unique sentence, contributing to a rich narrative. This approach is particularly wonderful for seasonal decorating, as it allows you to effortlessly blend existing pieces with new finds, handmade crafts, and natural elements.

For a spring mantel, “eclectic” translates into a delightful mix of fresh botanicals, whimsical accents, repurposed items, and perhaps a touch of unexpected color. It’s a style that celebrates individuality and comfort, making your home feel lived-in and loved. Instead of buying a whole new set of matching decor items, I often find myself “shopping the house” first. This not only saves money but also ensures that the final display truly reflects my personal taste and the items I already cherish. It’s a sustainable and creative way to refresh your space, proving that beautiful decor doesn’t always require a trip to the store.

Deconstructing This Eclectic Spring Mantel

The Star: A DIY Upholstery Webbing Banner

One of the true highlights of this spring mantel is the charming banner I crafted myself. Made from humble jute upholstery webbing, it brings a wonderfully rustic and organic texture to the display. This material, often found in furniture making, lends itself perfectly to DIY projects, offering a sturdy yet flexible base for a personalized message. The natural, earthy tone of the jute provides a lovely contrast to the brighter spring colors, grounding the entire arrangement. Its simplicity is its strength, making it a versatile piece that can be adapted for various seasons or occasions.

Creating an upholstery webbing banner like this is surprisingly straightforward, even for beginner crafters. It’s a project that delivers a high impact with minimal effort and cost. If you’re inspired to add a similar handmade touch to your spring decor, you’ll find a detailed, quick tutorial at the very end of this article. It’s a fantastic way to personalize your space and inject a sense of bespoke charm that store-bought decor often lacks.

A World in Glass: The Enduring Charm of a Terrarium

Another beloved element on this mantel is a terrarium that I’ve patiently held onto for years, waiting for the perfect opportunity to display it. Terrariums offer a miniature, self-contained world of greenery that adds a touch of enchantment to any setting. They are wonderful for bringing a bit of nature indoors, especially in smaller doses perfect for a mantelpiece.

Funnily enough, I’ve discovered that traditional live plants don’t always thrive in this particular terrarium environment. Instead of battling with finicky flora, I’ve found a brilliant solution that offers all the beauty with none of the fuss: moss rocks and preserved ferns. These elements provide the lush, verdant look of live plants without the need for constant watering, specific light conditions, or worry about wilting. This low-maintenance approach allows the terrarium to remain a vibrant, evergreen focal point, perfectly complementing the fresh themes of spring.

A Pop of Pastel: Breaking the Comfort Zone

While my usual decorating palette leans heavily towards neutrals and natural textures, this spring, I decided to venture slightly out of my comfort zone by incorporating a couple of pastel-colored eggs. And let me tell you, this was a departure! The soft, muted hues of pastel colors are quintessential spring, evoking images of fresh blooms and gentle sunshine. They introduce a subtle sweetness and a playful touch to the mantel, contrasting beautifully with the more rustic elements.

This subtle inclusion of pastels demonstrates how even small splashes of color can transform a space and signal a shift in seasons. If you’re curious to see how this eclectic look differs from my typical aesthetic, you can always peek at some of my previous mantel stylings. For instance, you can see one of my past spring mantels here, a summer mantel example here, and a fall mantel here. These examples will give you a clearer idea of my usual themes and why these pastels felt like such a delightful step into new territory for spring.

Bringing Life Indoors: Greenery & Blooms

No spring mantel is complete without an abundance of greenery and fresh flowers. These living elements are crucial for bringing a sense of vitality and natural beauty to your decor. For this display, I incorporated an elegant ivy topiary, which provides a lovely structural element and a continuous burst of green. Ivy is incredibly versatile and its trailing nature adds an organic flow to the arrangement.

Complementing the ivy are a delightful bunch of fresh flowers, an absolute steal at $3.99 from Trader Joe’s – a secret weapon for affordable, beautiful blooms! Trader Joe’s always has a fantastic selection of seasonal flowers that can instantly brighten any room. The vibrant colors and delicate petals of fresh flowers are truly the essence of spring, infusing the mantel with fragrance and visual softness. Their transient beauty reminds us to appreciate the fleeting moments of each season.

Personal Touches: Garden Accents & Books

To further enhance the eclectic garden theme and add character, I included a charming garden statue. These small sculptures can bring a touch of whimsy and personality, hinting at the outdoor spaces we cherish during warmer months. They serve as miniature pieces of art, adding an unexpected focal point and a narrative element to the display.

Finally, a few carefully selected books were integrated into the arrangement. Books are not just for reading; they are wonderful decorative elements. They add height, texture, and a sense of intellectual charm. Whether stacked or standing, they can serve as risers for smaller items or simply add to the visual weight and interest of the mantel. The combination of living things, a touch of garden charm, and literary accents truly hits all the right spring notes for a balanced and inviting display.

So, what about you? Are you planning to add any fresh colors, vibrant greenery, or lighter decorations to welcome spring into your home this year? I’d love to hear about your seasonal decorating traditions and inspirations!

DIY Upholstery Webbing Spring Banner Tutorial

Creating this customized upholstery webbing banner is a delightful and quick project that adds a handmade, rustic-chic touch to your spring mantel. It’s an inexpensive way to personalize your seasonal decor and can be easily adapted for other holidays or messages. Follow these simple steps to make your own!

Supplies

  • Upholstery webbing (or any type of thick burlap ribbon) – here’s an Amazon link to where I got mine
  • Chipboard or wood letters to spell “SPRING” – here are some similar to mine
  • 6 different craft paints in springy colors (or colors of your choice – white would be nice, too) & paint brush
  • Scissors, ruler, hot glue gun & stick of glue
  • Jute twine

Directions

1. Paint the Letters: Begin by painting your chipboard or wood letters in your chosen spring-inspired colors. You might find that some colors or types of paint require two coats to achieve a solid, vibrant finish. Set the letters aside to dry completely while you assemble the rest of your banner flags. This ensures they are perfectly ready for attachment later.

2. Create Banner ‘Flags’ from Upholstery Webbing:

  • First, determine the ideal length for each individual banner flag. To do this, hold one of your painted chipboard letters against the upholstery webbing. Allow enough room at the top to fold the webbing over the jute twine later, plus extra length for the decorative notch at the bottom. I found that cutting my pieces to 5 1/2-inches worked perfectly for the size of my letters.
  • Once you have your desired length, take one webbing flag and fold it precisely in half lengthwise. From the bottom of this fold, measure up 1 inch and mark this point. Now, angle your scissors from this 1-inch mark to the outside bottom corner of the folded webbing and cut. This will create a neat, V-shaped notch when the flag is unfolded. Repeat this process for the remaining five flags, ensuring each has a consistent and sharp notch.

3. Prepare the Twine and Arrange Flags: Cut a piece of jute twine to your desired overall banner length. Consider where you intend to hang the banner and measure accordingly, allowing for extra length for tying. Lay out your twine and then space your prepared webbing flags evenly along its length. A gap of 2 to 3 inches between each flag usually creates a pleasing visual balance.

4. Attach Flags to Twine: Take the first webbing flag. Fold the top edge over by about 1/2-inch to create a small hem. Carefully place the jute twine inside this fold. Apply a thin line of hot glue along the inside of the fold to secure the twine firmly in place. Press down gently to ensure a strong bond. Repeat this step for all the remaining flags, ensuring they are securely attached and evenly spaced on the twine.

5. Adhere Letters to Flags: By now, your painted letters should be completely dry. Flip each letter over and dab a few small dots of hot glue onto the back. Carefully center each letter onto its corresponding webbing flag, pressing firmly for a few seconds to secure it. Make sure the letters are straight and well-aligned for a polished finish.

I didn’t precisely time this crafting session, but I estimate that the entire banner, from painting to final assembly, took no more than 15 minutes to complete. It’s truly a quick and rewarding DIY project!

Crafting this banner, and arranging all the eclectic elements, will undoubtedly leave you with plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful spring weather, engage in other beloved spring activities, and simply revel in your fun, newly decorated space. Happy spring decorating!
