Mastering Goal Setting and Achieving Personal Success

Target to set and achieve goals

The turn of the year often brings with it a surge of enthusiasm for self-improvement, manifested in the popular tradition of New Year’s Resolutions. Yet, as Brian highlighted in this episode, the statistics paint a stark picture: a significant majority of these resolutions are abandoned before February even begins. This high failure rate isn’t just a matter of willpower; it often stems from fundamental misunderstandings about how personal change truly works. We explored what research consistently demonstrates as the most effective path to achieving lasting transformation, moving beyond fleeting motivation to sustainable strategies.

During our discussion, Brian referenced several insightful articles that delve into the psychology behind resolutions and long-term motivation. We highly recommend these reads for anyone looking to understand the common pitfalls and how to navigate them successfully:

  • Four Simple Steps to Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions on Forbes offers practical advice for building momentum and sustaining your commitments.
  • The Only Way to Keep Your Resolutions at The NY Times provides a thought-provoking perspective on shifting your approach for greater success.

I also shared a personal anecdote about one of my most gratifying goal achievements: transforming my reading habits from zero books in one year to a remarkable 31 the very next year. This wasn’t magic; it was a conscious decision to make reading a priority. I elaborate on that transformative goal and what initially inspired it here. What’s even more exciting is how that initial success snowballed – this past year, I managed to read an incredible 76 books! This journey truly underscores the power of setting a clear intention and consistently working towards it.

Moreover, we discussed the wisdom of Ray Dalio, a renowned investor and author, who outlines four crucial pitfalls to avoid when setting goals. His insights emphasize the importance of ensuring your goals are deeply aligned with your core values and that you’re addressing any self-sabotaging habits. You can delve deeper into his recommendations in this article: Quit These Bad Habits to Achieve Your Goals.

It’s a testament to the fact that success is often a marathon, not a sprint, and every step forward counts.

Farmhouse Updates: A Journey of Transformation

farmhouse master extension

Beyond personal goals, our ongoing farmhouse renovation project continues to be a source of both challenge and immense satisfaction. We’re thrilled to report on some significant progress since our last update! As you can see from the latest photo, the master bedroom extension has reached a major milestone: it is now fully framed and roofed – a truly exciting step forward! This phase brought its own set of unique considerations, particularly regarding the roofline. We had to ingeniously work with the existing, somewhat unconventional roofline of the original structure. To this day, we still ponder why it was built that way; to us, a regular peak would have seemed much more straightforward than the existing hipped end. Nevertheless, we’ve successfully integrated the new section while preserving the home’s character.

The corner closest to the viewer in the image marks the location of the new walk-in closet. And let me tell you, it’s a spacious one – a full 8×8 foot room! To ensure this practical space is also bright and inviting, we’ve made the decision to add a charming small square window, which is currently on order and will soon bathe the area in natural light. Inside the new master extension, the ceiling has been raised by over a foot, creating a wonderful sense of openness and airiness. This change, however, made our standard 3×5 windows appear a bit undersized. To counteract this and enhance the architectural appeal, we’ve decided to incorporate elegant transom windows above them. Opting for anything taller would have meant a custom order, so these transoms offer a perfect balance of aesthetics and practicality.

Further enhancing this end of the house, additional windows will be installed adjacent to the back door. We’ve already acquired a set of small, single-hung windows designed to sit side-by-side on the right of the door. This area is earmarked to become our highly functional mudroom and laundry room, a space that will undoubtedly streamline our daily routines and add significant convenience to our farmhouse living.

Oh, and for everyone who’s been curious about the siding – a common question we receive! Rest assured, it’s not just plywood. This is a robust, engineered siding that forms the perfect base for our planned board-and-batten finish. Once all the window moldings are meticulously installed and perfected, we will then attach 1×2 battens, creating that classic, charming board-and-batten look that perfectly complements the farmhouse aesthetic we’re aiming for. Each step, though sometimes challenging, brings us closer to our dream home.

What’s Cooking: Our Coziest Cold-Weather Soups

Bowl of Spicy Beef Tomato and Corn Stew

As the temperatures drop and crisp air fills the season, there’s nothing quite like a hearty, warming bowl of soup to bring comfort and joy. In this episode, we couldn’t resist sharing our family’s absolute favorite soup recipes – tried, tested, and beloved staples in our household. These are the dishes we turn to time and again when we need something delicious, nutritious, and perfectly comforting for cold weather:

  • Brian’s Top Picks:
    • Spicy Beef, Tomato, and Corn Stew: This stew is a robust and flavorful powerhouse, packed with tender beef, vibrant tomatoes, and sweet corn, all simmered in a rich, slightly spicy broth. It’s incredibly satisfying and perfect for a chilly evening.
    • Quick Corn & Sausage Chowder: For a faster but equally delicious option, this chowder delivers creamy goodness with the savory punch of sausage and the sweetness of corn. It’s a family-friendly favorite that comes together in a flash.
  • Jami’s Go-To Soups:
    • Cauliflower Cheese Soup: Creamy, cheesy, and surprisingly light, this soup transforms humble cauliflower into a luxurious and comforting bowl. It’s a fantastic way to get your vegetables in a delightfully decadent form.
    • Curried Turkey or Chicken and Rice Soup: This soup offers a wonderful blend of savory and aromatic flavors. The gentle warmth of curry spices pairs beautifully with tender turkey or chicken and rice, creating a nourishing and exotic twist on classic comfort.
  • Kid’s All-Time Favorite:
    • Homemade Tomato Soup: Nothing beats the classic comfort of homemade tomato soup, especially when it’s rich, tangy, and made with love. And, of course, it’s always served with the essential accompaniment: perfectly grilled cheese sandwiches! This timeless pairing is a guaranteed hit with children and adults alike.

We encourage you to try these recipes and bring some extra warmth and flavor to your own kitchen this season!

This is Really Cool! Our Latest Discoveries

Portable Scaffold

Every episode, we love to share those little (or big!) discoveries that have genuinely impressed us, simplified our lives, or simply brought us immense joy. This time, our “cool things” are a mix of practical innovation and heartwarming entertainment:

Brian’s Cool Thing: Heavy Duty Portable Scaffolding

The Heavy Duty Portable Scaffolding (we purchased ours from Harbor Freight, and Home Depot offers a very similar model at the same price here) has been an absolute game-changer for our ongoing farmhouse projects. If you’re involved in any significant DIY or renovation work, especially involving high walls or ceilings, this scaffolding is an indispensable tool. It’s far superior to constantly moving a ladder, saving not only an incredible amount of time but also significantly reducing strain on your neck and back. Imagine being able to work at a comfortable height, with all your essential tools and materials right there with you, eliminating countless trips up and down. This enhances efficiency, improves safety, and makes tedious tasks infinitely more manageable. Plus, it’s a smart investment; if you find you’re done with your projects, these units hold their value remarkably well, making them easy to resell on platforms like Craigslist for close to your original purchase price. It’s a truly cool tool that pays for itself in time, comfort, and peace of mind.

Jami’s Cool Thing: The “Instant Family” Movie

My latest cool thing is the incredibly heartfelt and humorous movie, “Instant Family.” Starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as a couple who unexpectedly decide to become foster parents and then find themselves adopting three siblings, this film is an absolute must-watch. What makes it particularly special is that it’s based in part on one of the writer’s real-life experiences, lending it an authentic and deeply resonant feel. It’s a brilliant blend of laugh-out-loud moments and incredibly poignant scenes, masterfully navigating the challenges and joys of foster care and adoption. This movie beautifully portrays the complexities of forming a family and the unconditional love that can blossom in the most unexpected ways. It’s genuinely good, impactful, and one I continue to talk about long after seeing it.
