And just like that, it’s May! The arrival of this month feels especially welcome this year. After a longer-than-usual cold spring, I’m eagerly anticipating the warmth of summer. The days are getting longer, and the promise of sunny afternoons spent outdoors is finally within reach, signaling a true seasonal shift.

Beyond the usual spring activities like getting our vegetable garden planted, nurturing new shrubs, applying fresh mulch, and simply enjoying the nicer weather outdoors, we’ve also made significant strides inside our farmhouse. Tackling various home improvement projects is always on our agenda, and this month brought some very satisfying progress.

No, we still haven’t finished the upstairs bathroom renovation, for those keeping track! That particular project is progressing at a deliberate pace. When dealing with an old house, uncovering and addressing foundational issues requires a thorough approach, ensuring everything is done correctly. Rest assured, I’ll provide comprehensive updates the moment it starts looking like real, visible accomplishments are being made!

However, I am thrilled to share two long-standing projects that have finally been checked off our “to-do” list. These items have been lingering since we moved into the farmhouse two years ago—yes, two whole years! Getting them done truly feels like a monumental achievement and has brought a renewed sense of completion and style to these spaces. This month’s list also includes a fantastic new leather purse I’m absolutely loving, along with my latest book discoveries and a couple of shows we thoroughly enjoyed watching last month. Prepare to be inspired by our latest “good things” finds!

May’s Curated “Good Things” List: Home, Style, and Entertainment

Farmhouse style coffee bar area featuring newly installed reclaimed wood shelves, cabinets, sink, and wood counters.

Farmhouse Coffee Bar: Reclaimed Wood Shelves Installation

One of the design elements we envisioned from the very beginning of our farmhouse remodel was incorporating shelving made from the original 100-year-old wood we meticulously salvaged. This antique lumber carries so much character and history, and we knew it would add unparalleled rustic charm to our spaces, especially the coffee bar area. It’s almost comical how easily these smaller, yet significant, details can be overlooked or postponed during a large-scale renovation, often lingering on the “someday” list for far too long.

Initially, my idea was quite simple: just attach the shelves directly to the sides of the existing cabinets. My husband, Brian, with his more practical and structural mindset, immediately rejected this notion. And honestly, he was right—I hadn’t really thought through the engineering or aesthetic implications of such a simplistic approach. This rejection sent me back to the drawing board, prompting a deeper dive into how to achieve the seamless, custom look I truly desired for our farmhouse kitchen.

The next challenge involved selecting the right support brackets. I was captivated by the elegant simplicity of floating shelves—the idea of the wood appearing to emerge directly from the wall. However, using our thick, heavy reclaimed wood presented a unique obstacle; it wasn’t conducive to the standard DIY floating shelf techniques I found in my research. True floating shelves often require specific construction methods within the wall or lightweight materials, neither of which aligned with our century-old timber. This made the search for appropriate hardware feel like a persistent puzzle, extending the project’s timeline considerably.

Finally—and I mean *finally*, after what felt like an eternity of pondering and searching—I stumbled upon these innovative “hidden” shelf brackets. What makes them truly special is their versatile design; they can be installed either upwards or downwards, allowing you to choose whether the brackets are visible or neatly concealed, creating that coveted floating effect. This discovery was a game-changer for our reclaimed wood project, offering the perfect blend of structural integrity and minimalist aesthetics.

While the functionality of these brackets was ideal, their standard black finish didn’t quite align with the warm, antique aesthetic we were cultivating. To perfectly match our existing cabinet hardware, which features a beautiful, subtle gold tone, I decided to customize them. I used Rub N Buff in the “Antique Gold” shade. This simple application transformed the brackets, allowing them to blend seamlessly and elevate the overall look of the coffee bar. And the result? I absolutely LOVE them! They truly provide that polished, finished touch to the entire area, tying everything together beautifully and adding an authentic farmhouse touch, don’t you agree?

The versatility of these brackets is an added bonus; they come in a convenient set of six. This meant I had extra brackets left over, which I immediately put to good use. I utilized two more to install a much-needed shelf in our bathroom—another project that had been patiently waiting for its turn. Naturally, I painted these gold as well, ensuring a cohesive design throughout the house. The transformation in both the coffee bar and the bathroom is remarkable. These reclaimed wood shelves add not just functional storage but also a significant touch of authentic farmhouse style, completing these spaces in a way I’m absolutely delighted with!

Discovering the Perfect Leather Crossbody Purse

It recently dawned on me that my go-to everyday purse was a beloved relic from our unforgettable 2014 trip to Greece. While the quality leather has held up remarkably well over the years, proving its enduring craftsmanship, the interior lining has long since succumbed to wear and tear, and the straps were beginning to show significant signs of fraying. It was clear: the time had finally come for a replacement, a stylish and functional upgrade that could meet the demands of my daily life.

Serendipitously, a flyer arrived in my mailbox from a company I hadn’t heard of before: Portland Leather. Given that they are a local business—a huge plus for me, as I love supporting regional artisans and companies—I immediately headed online to explore their offerings. I was pleasantly surprised to discover a vast array of beautifully crafted leather purses, all available at what I considered to be very reasonable price points for such high-quality goods. This discovery felt like hitting the jackpot in my quest for a new accessory.

I have quite specific criteria when it comes to choosing a purse, as I prioritize both functionality and comfort. My ideal bag is a small crossbody style, allowing me to be completely hands-free—a necessity for everything from grocery shopping to navigating busy spaces. Crucially, it must also feature an easily accessible outside pocket, perfectly sized for my phone. This allows for quick retrieval without having to rummage through the main compartment. My search on the Portland Leather website quickly led me to the “Eclipse” model, which appeared to tick all the boxes. The only real challenge was deciding on a color, but after much deliberation, I settled on classic black for its versatility and timeless appeal.

Despite its compact size, the “Eclipse” purse is surprisingly spacious and incredibly well-designed. It comfortably accommodates all my daily essentials with room to spare: my wallet, glasses, keys, a small mint tin, a change purse, and even a little baggie of nuts for a quick snack. The exterior pocket is indeed perfect, allowing my phone to slip in and out effortlessly, just as I’d hoped. This thoughtful design means everything I need is organized and within easy reach.

I absolutely adore how it sits perfectly at my hip. The adjustable strap ensures that it never feels too bulky or hangs too low, preventing it from swinging against my leg as I walk. The craftsmanship of this bag is truly exceptional; the leather feels luxurious and durable, a testament to its quality. The shipping was remarkably swift, and the packaging was robust and protective, ensuring the purse arrived in pristine condition. I’m so thoroughly impressed with this purchase that I’m already eyeing a beautiful brown bag from their collection! If you’re in the market for a high-quality, stylish leather purse (and particularly if you’re in the Pacific Northwest, supporting a local gem!), you can get 30% off your first order of $100 or more with this exclusive link. It’s an opportunity to invest in a piece that combines elegance, functionality, and lasting quality.

April Reads: A Mix of Mystery, Memoir, and Mindfulness

Collage of book covers from April 2023 reads, including mysteries, a character-driven novel, and a non-fiction title.

The Consequences of Fear (Maisie Dobbs 16) and A Sunlit Weapon (Maisie Dobbs 17) by Jacqueline Winspear

I recently finished the last two installments of the Maisie Dobbs mystery series, and it’s with a genuine sense of sadness that I bid farewell to Maisie, her evolving family, and her loyal circle of friends. Over the past five or so books, the characters in this series truly came alive for me, developing into individuals I deeply cared about. I’m incredibly glad I persevered with the series, even after initially feeling a disconnect with the direction the author took Maisie’s character earlier on. It was immensely gratifying to witness her finally establish a family and begin to prioritize her personal life alongside her professional endeavors. While I’ve heard whispers of another book in the series, for now, I join the ranks of devoted readers patiently awaiting its release, much like everyone else who has devoured these captivating historical mysteries.

As I’ve mentioned before, I was never truly drawn to mysteries until I stumbled upon Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache/Three Pines series. I realized that my enjoyment hinges on the mystery or murder serving as a backdrop to a richer narrative, one filled with compelling characters and intricate side stories. The Maisie Dobbs series, recommended by several astute readers, perfectly fits this preference, quickly becoming a favorite. Its historical aspect is a significant draw, beginning in the tumultuous years of WWI and progressing through to WWII. This historical foundation provides a fascinating lens through which to explore detective work and human resilience. I learned so much about what life must have been like in London during those decades, particularly during the harrowing years of the Blitz. Ahh, I’ll truly miss Maisie and her world—perhaps a re-read from the beginning is in order, a comforting journey back into a cherished literary universe!

The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal

This book has frequently appeared on “must-read” lists, garnering widespread praise, yet I initially hesitated to pick it up. My reluctance stemmed from having read Stradal’s other novel, “Kitchens of the Great Midwest,” which, despite its cleverness, left me with a rather melancholic impression. However, I’m so pleased I eventually gave “The Lager Queen of Minnesota” a chance, especially in audiobook format. While it certainly delves into challenging themes and features some plot points that stretched my understanding, the overarching narrative is surprisingly positive and uplifting. The story beautifully illustrates the profound capacity for individuals to change and grow, often through the steadfast belief and support of just one person who sees their potential. Spanning several decades, the plot thoughtfully revolves around the world of craft beer. Interestingly, much of the detailed exposition about beer-making went right over my head—I found myself closely relating to the character who simply couldn’t grasp the allure of beer! Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of the characters and their pursuit of dreams. My advice? Stick with it until the end; there are moments where you might wonder if things will ever resolve, but rest assured, it delivers a deeply satisfying conclusion.

Find Your People by Jennie Allen

This non-fiction title came highly recommended by several book influencers I follow on Instagram, prompting me to borrow it from my local library. Unfortunately, I found that the practical “action steps” outlined within the book weren’t particularly useful or, frankly, even necessary for my personal situation and distinctly introverted personality. As I progressed through the chapters, it became increasingly apparent that the author, Jennie Allen, possesses an incredibly extroverted approach to community-building—a style so vibrant and energetic that, to be honest, I questioned if our personalities would even mesh in a friendship! The more I read, the more I realized that this particular guide wasn’t resonating with my own needs or preferences for connection. Consequently, I decided to abandon the book at about the halfway mark. It’s important to note that this is purely my subjective experience; many other reviewers have absolutely adored this book and found immense value in its teachings. So, if the premise of finding deeper community and building stronger friendships appeals to you, I still encourage you to give it a try—it might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Crime on The Fens by Joy Ellis

This book marks the beginning of a new mystery series featuring DI Nikki Galena, set in an unspecified region of rural England—a location I never quite managed to pinpoint, which added a touch of enigmatic charm. It was recommended to me by fellow readers who knew of my enjoyment for the Maisie Dobbs series and some of the Three Pines novels. Intrigued, I decided to give it a shot. While the characters offered intriguing backstories and individual quirks, I found the overall tone a bit grittier and more intense than I typically prefer in my mystery reads. The mysteries and murders themselves took center stage, with graphic details and high-stakes tension that, at times, created a bit of stress rather than pure enjoyment for me. However, it’s undeniably a well-written novel with a strong sense of place and atmosphere. If you’re a fan of many of the British PBS mystery series, which often delve into darker themes and intricate police procedurals, then “Crime on The Fens” might be perfectly suited to your tastes.

Leviticus by Skip Heitzig (Audio Commentary)

This year, Brian and I are committed to reading through the entire Bible. After navigating the complexities of Leviticus a few months ago, I felt a strong desire for an in-depth commentary to help me better understand the ancient cultural and societal contexts that underpin its laws and narratives. I hoped for insights that would make the text more meaningful and relatable to me. I discovered this commentary on Hoopla and began listening, not realizing until much later that it was an extensive 15-hour recording of a study that the author/pastor, Skip Heitzig, conducted with his church. Once I was immersed, however, I was completely captivated. I quickly learned that Skip Heitzig is not only an excellent speaker but also incredibly knowledgeable, presenting the material in a way that makes the historical and spiritual significance of Leviticus incredibly clear. Since it was an audio recording of a live study, I simply skipped over the prayers, communion segments, and altar calls, which likely brought the listening time down to a still substantial 13-14 hours. I particularly appreciated how he wove together the historical context, societal customs, and the profound ways in which Leviticus foreshadows Jesus in the New Testament and speaks to us today. I enjoyed his presentations so much that I’m now planning to explore more of his insightful teachings, which I’ve found readily available on Hoopla.

What We’ve Been Watching: Cinematic & Comedic Gems

Air, Theaters (coming to Amazon soon)

Brian and I enjoyed a wonderful date night out at the movies to see “Air,” and we both absolutely loved it. The film chronicles the incredible true story of Nike’s groundbreaking pursuit of Michael Jordan in the mid-1980s, a partnership that forever changed the world of sports and marketing. We particularly enjoyed the strong connection to our home state, reveling in the Portland setting and getting a glimpse into the early days of an Oregon company that has become a global phenomenon and one we’re very familiar with. Beyond the local appeal, the narrative itself was incredibly compelling, highlighting the intense risks and visionary decisions made by a relatively small team. The acting was superb across the board, with standout performances, especially from Viola Davis, who brought remarkable depth and gravitas to her role as Deloris Jordan. It’s a truly inspiring story of ambition, belief, and the power of a single bold idea.

Leanne Morgan’s Netflix Stand-Up Comedy Special

We recently watched Leanne Morgan’s stand-up comedy special on Netflix, and oh my gosh, she is SO incredibly funny! Brian and I found ourselves laughing out loud, often hysterically, throughout the entire show. Her humor is refreshingly clean, making it enjoyable for a wide audience, and her observations about everyday life, marriage, and aging are remarkably relatable. She possesses a unique charm and an ability to find humor in common experiences, delivering her punchlines with perfect comedic timing. If you’re in need of a good, hearty laugh and appreciate comedy that’s both witty and heartwarming, I wholeheartedly recommend watching her special—you won’t regret it!
