Welcome to November, the month that truly ushers in the official start of the holiday season! As the days grow shorter and the air becomes crisp, our thoughts naturally turn to festive preparations, cherished family traditions, and the joy of giving. This period, while wonderful, can also feel overwhelming without a clear direction. That’s precisely why proactive planning is so crucial. Have you had a chance to download your free Holiday Planner yet? It’s an indispensable resource designed to help you thoughtfully decide which activities and goals are most important to you during this special time. More than just a planning tool, it’s also a fantastic journal to track your experiences: what you did and enjoyed (or didn’t!), the homemade gifts you crafted, the presents you gave (avoiding repeats is always a plus!), and the memorable meals you shared. This systematic approach allows you to refine and enhance your holiday celebrations year after year.

While some might argue that a spontaneous, “fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants” method for the holidays is simpler, my experience has taught me otherwise. I approach holiday planning with the same philosophy I apply to organizing my entire life (using my beloved Flexible Planner, of course!). My deepest desire is not to look back at the end of December and realize I merely reacted to life’s demands. When I allow events to unfold without intentionality, it often feels like only the most urgent, often trivial, tasks get accomplished, and I completely lose sight of the grander, more meaningful picture. This tendency has, regrettably, overshadowed many past holiday seasons for me, fueled by the misconception that I had to do *absolutely everything* to make the season magical. This exhaustive pursuit often led to stress rather than joy.

Taking the dedicated time to plan helps me tremendously. It allows me to focus on what truly matters, initiate conversations with my family about their favorite traditions, and prioritize the activities we genuinely enjoy. Equally important, it empowers me to gracefully let go of the things that no longer bring us joy or add value. This intentional curation helps us create a holiday season that is deeply personal, joyful, and free from unnecessary pressure. I sincerely hope the planner provides you with the same sense of clarity and empowerment, guiding you toward a more peaceful, purposeful, and profoundly joyful holiday experience this November and beyond. Let’s make this season about cherished moments, not just a frantic checklist.

Now, let’s transition to this month’s delightful collection of “good things”! This edition is packed with inspiring recommendations, including a fascinating travel adventure, a detailed glimpse into my 2018 Christmas decor plan (there’s that strategic planning mindset again, essential for any creative endeavor!), an enthusiastic review of the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned, a roundup of the books that captured my imagination, and the captivating television shows and movies we’ve been watching. My aim is to offer a diverse blend of practical finds, aesthetic inspiration, and engaging entertainment. I truly hope you discover something wonderfully inspiring or supremely useful on this list that brightens your November!

November’s Featured Favorites: Inspiring Finds for Your Home, Wardrobe & Mind

Travel Discovery: The Unforgettable Jungle Jim’s International Market

Jungle Jim's International Market exterior with playful gorilla statue

Towards the end of last month, Brian and I embarked on a delightful two-week travel circuit, beginning in our home state of Oregon, journeying eastward to Cincinnati, Ohio, and then continuing south to Arizona for our cherished annual visit with my Dad. While in Ohio, we had the pleasure of reconnecting with old friends who insisted on taking us to a place they enthusiastically dubbed “the Disneyland of grocery stores.” They were not exaggerating in the slightest! We arrived at Jungle Jim’s International Market (we visited one of their two impressive locations in the greater Cincinnati area), and it was an experience unlike any supermarket I had ever encountered.

If the idea of visiting a grocery store as a tourist attraction sounds peculiar, allow me to clarify: this is far from your typical neighborhood market! Jungle Jim’s is such a unique and significant establishment that it proudly features its own Wikipedia page, detailing its appearances in numerous television shows and publications. The owner has invested immensely in creating a truly visually entertaining and immersive environment. From the moment you pull into the parking lot, you’re greeted by whimsical sights like a functioning monorail and a giant, playful gorilla statue at the entrance, immediately signaling that this is no ordinary shopping trip. Inside, the theatricality continues with full-sized vehicles, including a car, a boat, and even a firetruck, creatively integrated into the store’s vibrant decor. The sheer volume of quirky details is almost impossible to fully absorb or even remember!

However, what truly makes Jungle Jim’s shine is the astonishing variety of foods sourced from across the globe. They don’t simply have an “Asian section”; instead, the international aisles are meticulously segmented into specific country sections such as Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, and Thailand. This detailed organization extends to other continents as well – if there’s a cuisine you’re seeking, you are almost guaranteed to find the authentic ingredients here. The fresh seafood area is particularly impressive, boasting an array of fish on ice and even live specimens in enormous tanks, a sight that powerfully evoked memories of Seattle’s iconic Pike Place Market – an incredible feat for a store located in landlocked Ohio! Furthermore, the produce section offers an unparalleled selection of fresh fruits and vegetables from virtually every corner of the world, transforming grocery shopping into a global culinary exploration.

And then there are the samples! We grazed our way through so many delicious offerings that we practically pieced together a full lunch there. The market also features a charming small theater where you can sit and watch a captivating documentary about how the store came to be, tracing its fascinating origins back to the 1970s. Even the doors to the restrooms, ingeniously designed to resemble port-a-potties, have gained considerable fame! With an astounding 29 cash registers – the most I’ve ever witnessed in a single retail space – our friends informed us that during peak hours, it’s not uncommon for every single one to be in use, a testament to the market’s immense popularity and bustling atmosphere.

Our visit to Jungle Jim’s was an absolute delight – a truly unique blend of amusement and gourmet shopping. My only regret was not having more available space in my carry-on luggage for additional culinary treasures beyond the delicious chocolate and artisan sausage we ended up buying, especially since their prices were also remarkably competitive. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit if you ever find yourself in the Cincinnati area; it’s an experience that transcends typical grocery shopping and becomes a memorable cultural adventure. Are any of you fortunate enough to be regular patrons of this incredible international market?

Home Decor Inspiration: My 2018 Christmas Decor Plan Revealed

Green, Galvanized, Gold & Buffalo Check Christmas decor plan board for 2018

It’s that exciting time of year again: time to unveil my 2018 Christmas Decor Plan! For the past few years, I’ve found immense satisfaction and a sense of calm in putting together a simple yet cohesive plan for any new decorative elements I wish to integrate into our Christmas decorations. This process serves a dual purpose: it helps me stay organized and focused on my vision, and hopefully, it offers a dash of inspiration for your own festive decorating projects. (Pro-tip: Feel free to pin the image above to your Christmas boards on Pinterest so you can easily recall these ideas later!)

This year, I’m lovingly building upon the rustic charm of last year’s popular galvanized theme, introducing new layers of texture and color to create an even cozier and more sophisticated holiday ambiance. My updated palette incorporates the timeless appeal of black buffalo check, a richer and deeper forest green, organic and soft natural elements like frosted lamb’s ear and eucalyptus, and elegant, shimmering touches of gold. These components are chosen to harmonize beautifully, creating a rustic yet refined aesthetic that evokes warmth and celebration. The items thoughtfully pictured above are a blend of new acquisitions and cherished pieces I already own, all carefully selected to work together in crafting this year’s festive displays across our tabletops, shelves, Christmas tree, and soft furnishings. Given that I still don’t have a traditional mantel to adorn, I’ll be channeling my creativity to find unique and charming spots throughout our home to showcase these lovely decor pieces, demonstrating that beautiful holiday decor is achievable in any space, regardless of its architectural features.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the specific items featured in my 2018 Christmas decor plan, complete with links where available, organized from left to right within each row for easy reference:

Row One: Foundation & Texture

  • Buffalo Check Pillows: These classic, bold patterns instantly inject a welcoming, farmhouse-inspired coziness and visual interest into any seating arrangement, perfectly complementing the rustic theme.
  • Small Galvanized Houses: I’m excited to reuse the charming faux galvanized houses I crafted last year. They add a whimsical, miniature village feel to tabletops or shelves. You can find similar ones to purchase here if you prefer to buy rather than DIY.
  • Lamb’s Ear Garland: The soft, velvety texture and muted green hue of this garland introduce a beautiful frosted, natural element, softening the metallic and bold patterns with its gentle presence.

Row Two: Statements & Sparkle

  • Joy to The World Wood Sign: A timeless and heartfelt piece that conveys a warm, festive message, providing a focal point or a charming accent to any holiday display.
  • Galvanized Metal Bottle Caddy: While this specific item from Hobby Lobby is no longer available, it serves as a wonderful example of how to incorporate industrial-chic galvanized elements in both a functional and aesthetically pleasing way. Keep an eye out for similar vintage-inspired finds at craft stores or antique shops!
  • Slim Gold Candlesticks: These elegant candlesticks introduce a delicate touch of glamour and warmth. The provided link offers similar styles to the ones I already own, but don’t forget to explore local thrift stores for unique, budget-friendly treasures!

Row Three: Details & Richness

  • Galvanized Tags: Perfect for adding personalized touches to gifts, adorning stockings, or even serving as charming ornaments on the tree, these continue the metallic theme with understated sophistication.
  • Buffalo Check Ribbon: This versatile ribbon is a fantastic element for tying the entire theme together. Use it for wrapping presents, crafting bows for wreaths, or weaving through garlands for a cohesive and distinctive look.
  • Frosted Leaves & Pearl Garland: This piece adds another exquisite layer of natural elegance, with its subtle shimmer and delicate pearl accents mimicking the gentle, ethereal touch of winter.
  • Green Cotton Tablecloth: I acquired mine from H&M Home, though it’s no longer available in this exact color. A rich, deep green tablecloth serves as an excellent foundational layer, grounding the lighter decorative elements and creating a luxurious backdrop. Here’s a similar option to help you achieve that lush, inviting base for your holiday table.

Row Four: Festive Accents & Table Settings

  • Galvanized Holiday Greens Container: This charming container is ideal for holding small evergreen clippings, creating delightful miniature displays with a rustic flair, or even for organizing small ornaments.
  • Bottle Brush Trees (plus regular small faux trees): I’ve accumulated a lovely collection of these over the years. They add a whimsical, vintage charm that’s perfect for creating festive vignettes. You can easily find similar styles here to begin or expand your own collection.
  • 12 Buffalo Check Napkins: Coordinating napkins are an effortless yet impactful way to extend the chosen theme to your dining table, creating a cohesive, inviting, and stylish tablescape for all your holiday meals and gatherings.

I understand it’s just the beginning of November, and I’m certainly not trying to rush the season. However, I wanted to share this detailed plan early so that if any of these rustic-chic Christmas decor ideas capture your imagination, you have ample time to source and gather the items. Please rest assured, I won’t be decking our halls until closer to the end of the month – I am absolutely committed to fully enjoying and celebrating Thanksgiving first! So, please stay tuned to see how all these beautiful elements ultimately come together to create a festive, warm, and inviting atmosphere in our home. I’m truly excited to share the final, decorated look with you soon!

Fashion Find: The Ultimate Comfortable Bootie for All-Day Wear

Me Too Zoey Bootie in brown, perfect for comfort

Let me introduce you to the MOST comfortable bootie I have ever owned – this truly has been a revolutionary addition to my footwear collection! For years, I had almost entirely given up on the quest to find comfortable ankle boots. I possessed a couple of pairs, but they were strictly reserved for very short outings, as the inevitable toe-rubbing, pinching, and general discomfort would quickly escalate to unbearable levels. However, when my favorite brown pair finally started showing significant signs of wear and tear, and I happened to have a DSW reward to utilize, I decided to dedicate one last, serious effort to finding a truly comfortable option on their website.

It was during this determined search that I stumbled upon the Me Too Zoey Bootie. What instantly grabbed my attention were the overwhelmingly positive reviews, with nearly every single commenter declaring it to be “the most comfortable bootie ever.” Intrigued, yet maintaining a healthy dose of skepticism given my past disappointing experiences, I decided to order a pair. I am absolutely thrilled to report that I am now just as utterly amazed as all those glowing reviewers! Straight out of the box, I wore them for several hours around the house and was genuinely astonished by their comfort – there was absolutely no pinching, no rubbing, and no discomfort whatsoever. This was an unprecedented revelation for me.

But the ultimate test of their comfort came shortly thereafter. As you know, Brian and I embarked on a multi-state travel loop, which included extensive, day-long airport transits. As anyone who flies frequently can attest, airport travel often involves a considerable amount of fast walking, brisk strides, and even occasional frantic running to catch connecting flights. These booties performed flawlessly! Not once did my toes feel pinched, sore, or uncomfortable, even after hours of continuous movement and stress. They held up beautifully, providing unwavering comfort throughout. I was so profoundly impressed that I immediately attempted to order a black pair, only to discover they were temporarily out of stock. Fortunately, as I was compiling this very list, I noticed they are back in stock, so if you are actively searching for genuinely comfortable and stylish booties, I strongly urge you to act fast! (A quick note on sizing: I consistently wear a size 9, and the size 9 in these booties fit perfectly, indicating they run true to size.) Investing in comfortable, yet fashionable, footwear like the Me Too Zoey Bootie can truly transform your travel experiences and elevate your everyday comfort, making every step a pleasure.

October Reads: A Diverse Literary Journey

Five book reviews from October 2018 including To Sir With Love and The Masterpiece

My reading journey in 2018 has been exceptionally fruitful and rewarding! I’m thrilled to report that I’ve now read an impressive 71 books. Considering my initial goal of 50 books was not only met but significantly surpassed quite a while ago, I now feel completely confident in setting a new, more ambitious annual reading goal of 75 books from here on out. This continuous commitment to reading consistently enriches my life in countless, unexpected ways.

October, in particular, proved to be an exceptionally interesting and varied month for my literary adventures. It was a period marked by both surprising discoveries and strong emotional reactions: I experienced a first by returning a book to Audible due to profound disappointment, I was unexpectedly disturbed by a classic work that I had eagerly anticipated would be wonderful, and conversely, I found myself completely inspired by an older memoir that I had previously only known through its film adaptation. These diverse experiences truly highlight the subjective, personal, and sometimes surprising nature of engaging with literature. I would be absolutely delighted to hear your perspectives on any of these titles – perhaps I missed a crucial nuance in a story, or are my feelings shared by others in the reading community?

  • To Sir With Love, by E.R. Braithwaite: This poignant memoir serendipitously appeared in my library app, and remembering my profound enjoyment of the classic Sydney Poitier movie adaptation, I decided to give the audiobook a listen while tending to my garden. I was utterly and completely inspired by this book! Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II in England, it chronicles the real-life struggle of E.R. Braithwaite, a highly educated Black man, as he navigates widespread racial discrimination in his search for employment after bravely serving in the armed forces. He ultimately accepts a challenging teaching position in a notoriously tough, underprivileged East End London school, a place where previous teachers had often failed to connect with the students. What truly resonated with me was his unwavering ability to see beyond the students’ challenging exteriors and difficult circumstances, recognizing their inherent potential for greater things. His determination not to be beaten down by systemic prejudices, but instead to pour his best efforts into a demanding job, was incredibly refreshing and served as a powerful testament to resilience, empathy, and the transformative power of a dedicated mentor. This book is a must-read for anyone who appreciates stories of human dignity, overcoming adversity, and the quiet heroism found in everyday acts of compassion.
  • The Search for God, by C.S. Lewis: This collection represents another enriching installment in my ongoing morning ritual of listening to C.S. Lewis’s profound talks and essays. These published essays are brimming with insightful “ah-ha” moments, offering deep theological reflections that are both intellectually stimulating and spiritually enriching. This particular collection focuses on fundamental aspects of his theology, tackling profound and enduring questions such as, “What are we to make of Jesus?” Lewis’s response is both challenging and thought-provoking: “There is no question of what we can make of Him; it is entirely a question of what He intends to make of us. You must accept or reject the story.” The essays also delve into complex and critical topics like evolution, the problem of pain, and include timeless classics such as “God in the Dock,” offering enduring reflections on faith, reason, and the human condition. For those interested in Christian apologetics, philosophical theology, or simply engaging with a brilliant mind, Lewis remains an unparalleled and accessible guide.
  • East of Eden, by John Steinbeck: I had approached this monumental book with such high hopes and immense anticipation. I had read extensively that John Steinbeck himself considered it his magnum opus, a deeply personal and epic work rich with layered Biblical symbolism, and I had previously been captivated by his powerful social commentary in *The Grapes of Wrath*. Indeed, from the very first page, the sheer brilliance and descriptive power of Steinbeck’s writing are undeniable – he effortlessly draws you into the vivid landscape of the Salinas Valley. However, as I continued reading, I found myself increasingly disturbed by the intense, often brutal imagery, the pervasive meanness, raw violence, and unsettling sociopathy portrayed within its pages. The narrative, while masterfully crafted and undeniably compelling, presented a bleakness and darkness that I found personally challenging to reconcile. After approximately three-quarters of the way through, I reluctantly made the decision to give up, skimming the remainder and only reading the ending in the desperate hope of finding some form of ultimate redemption or resolution. While there was indeed a glimmer of hope and an attempt at redemption, I personally felt it was insufficient to counterbalance the preceding darkness and the enduring wish to “unsee” some of the more harrowing and disturbing scenes. I am certain many of you have read this classic and deeply impactful novel – I’d genuinely welcome your thoughts, interpretations, and insights. Did I perhaps miss a deeper philosophical message, or is its inherent darkness a common and strong reaction among readers?
  • The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, by Jonas Jonasson: This book has earned a rather unique and distinct place in my personal reading history as the very first title I have ever returned to Audible. My strong dislike for it was quite immediate and persistent. It firmly falls into the genre of dark humor, a style that often asks readers to find amusement in death, absurd coincidences, and poor decisions, a premise that was reiterated relentlessly throughout the narrative. For me, the pervasive nature of this humor was simply too much. The scope of the story felt overly ambitious, attempting to be a *Forrest Gump*-esque narrative where the elderly protagonist inexplicably finds himself at the center of nearly every major political and historical event of the past five decades. This constant, tongue-in-cheek style often felt less clever and more eye-roll inducing, bordering on predictable and obvious satire. While I fully appreciate that humor is inherently subjective, this particular brand of it did not resonate with my sensibilities at all. Please feel free to contradict me if your experience was entirely different; I am always genuinely open to hearing and understanding other perspectives on literature!
  • The Masterpiece, by Francine Rivers: Prior to picking up this novel, I had primarily only read Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, which remains firmly entrenched as one of my all-time favorite books. So, when I spotted *The Masterpiece* available during an Audible sale, I eagerly acquired it and began listening during our recent plane journey. Rivers is, without a doubt, an incredibly skilled and compelling storyteller, possessing a rare talent for drawing you deeply into her narratives from the very first page, much like the magnetic opening of a Steinbeck novel. In this particular instance, I thoroughly enjoyed the vast majority of the book, actively seeking out any free moment I could find to continue listening to its unfolding story. The main characters felt incredibly real, authentic, and multi-dimensional to me, and I found myself wholeheartedly rooting for them throughout their often challenging journeys. My only minor reservation lies in the latter half of the book, where the narrative incorporates a significant amount of vivid heaven and hell symbolism – at one point, demons are literally depicted as grasping the lead male character’s leg in an attempt to pull him down, an event that leads to a later physical wound and permanent limp. I also pondered if the profound spiritual transformation experienced by this character felt a little too rapid and intense, perhaps occurring too soon after his initial acceptance of Christ. Despite these few points of reflection, it was, overall, a deeply compelling, well-written, and emotionally engaging book that I would certainly recommend, especially for fans of inspirational fiction rich in character development and spiritual themes.

On Our Screens: Captivating Shows and Cinematic Experiences

Television Series That Spark Conversation

The Good Place TV series still featuring main characters

  • The Good Place– NBC, available on Netflix & Hulu: When the trailers for *The Good Place* first began airing a couple of years ago, my husband Brian and I, both Christians, admit we initially rolled our eyes. The premise seemed to be another predictable Hollywood attempt to laugh at or demean individuals with religious beliefs. However, to our surprise, we started seeing a cascade of glowing reviews, with critics describing the show as genuinely “good,” “refreshing,” and notably “clean”—a narrative centered around people earnestly striving to become better individuals. *Huh?* This growing curiosity, combined with a compelling New York Times article highlighting its philosophical depth, finally convinced us to give it a try. And we are so incredibly glad we did! While there are undeniably some theological concepts presented that diverge significantly from our personal beliefs, that isn’t the show’s core focus or primary message. *The Good Place* is remarkably clever, genuinely laugh-out-loud funny, and brilliantly pokes fun at self-centered individuals and those who treat others poorly, often with hilarious and insightful consequences. It’s also surprisingly intellectual, expertly weaving in fascinating discussions about philosophy, ethics, and the complex process of applying these abstract ideas to real-life moral dilemmas. It manages to be profoundly entertaining while simultaneously provoking deep thought, making it a unique and highly enjoyable watch. If you’ve had the pleasure of watching it, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts, interpretations, and favorite moments!
  • The Good Cop TV series still with Tony Danza and Josh Groban

  • The Good Cop– Netflix: Despite hearing from our daughter that she’d read decidedly lukewarm reviews, Brian and I admittedly watched the first episode of *The Good Cop* primarily out of curiosity to see pop star Josh Groban’s acting chops. To our pleasant surprise, he’s actually quite good in his role, and we both ended up genuinely liking the show! While the Tony Danza character can sometimes lean towards being a bit annoying with his old-school ways, the overall charm of the series lies in its refreshingly old-fashioned production style and consistently light-hearted storylines. It offers a welcome departure from many contemporary crime dramas, as there’s absolutely no gore, excessive violence, or overtly gritty police procedural elements. This unique approach makes it a genuinely fun and easy watch, and remarkably, it stands out as a Netflix show that feels genuinely safe and appropriate to watch with children – an unexpected and delightful find!
  • Homecoming– Amazon Prime Video: Last year, Brian and I were completely captivated by the *Homecoming* podcast. It was a brilliantly executed psychological thriller, so expertly produced as an audio drama that it felt reminiscent of listening to the classic radio shows of yesteryear. Naturally, we were intensely curious, and perhaps a little apprehensive, about how such a unique and auditory experience would translate to a visual television series. We’ve now watched a couple of episodes, and it’s proving to be pretty compelling! The series employs an intriguing and effective visual technique, cleverly jumping between past and present timelines, with the past distinguished by a wide-screen format and the present by a narrower, more claustrophobic screen. Julia Roberts delivers a fantastic, nuanced performance, though I do admit to wondering why David Schwimmer wasn’t retained as the Colin character, as I felt his voice acting in the original podcast was just as compelling and perfectly suited as the actor they ultimately hired for the screen adaptation. It’s a gripping psychological thriller that skillfully keeps you guessing.
  • The Romanoff’s– Amazon Prime Video: We only managed to watch a single episode of *The Romanoff’s* before deciding it wasn’t for us. To be frank, we found it to be quite slow-paced and rather odd in its execution. Despite the intriguing title, there’s surprisingly little direct mention or strong connection to the actual Romanov family or their historical legacy. Each episode is designed as a standalone story with no recurring characters or overarching plot, which ultimately contributed to a disjointed and somewhat unengaging viewing experience for us. Ultimately, it lacked the cohesive narrative or engaging pace that we typically enjoy in a series. Did any of you give it a try and find yourselves liking it? I’m genuinely curious to hear other opinions on this particular anthology series.

A Resplendent Cinematic Experience

We recently had the immense pleasure of seeing the newest remake of A Star is Born, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, in theaters. It was truly a superbly directed, powerfully acted, and deeply emotional film. I was particularly captivated by and absolutely adored the concert scenes, which I later learned were innovatively filmed before actual live concert audiences who were there to see Lady Gaga perform. This ingenious approach lent an incredible sense of authenticity, raw energy, and immersive realism to those musical moments, making them feel incredibly visceral and powerful. The core story, of course, remains the same poignant and ultimately sad narrative of fame, love, and loss, which does lead one to wonder why this particular tale continues to be remade across generations. However, the songs featured throughout the film were exceptionally beautiful, memorable, and expertly crafted, adding another profound layer of depth to the emotional arc of the narrative. While there was some notable swearing (it seems increasingly difficult to escape the occasional “f-bomb” in much of modern cinema, doesn’t it?), the film contained very little else that would make a viewer uncomfortable, focusing instead on its powerful performances, compelling emotional journey, and timeless themes. I would genuinely love to know what you thought if you had the opportunity to see it!

And that gracefully concludes another exciting and inspiring edition of the Good Things List!
