The Eureka Moment: Recreating a Store-Bought Favorite
The journey to creating this perfect homemade feta dip began years ago when my sister-in-law introduced us to Toby’s Feta Dressing & Dip. Produced by a local Eugene company, this refrigerated product quickly became one of our favorite indulgences. Its creamy texture and bold feta flavor were irresistible, but with a price tag often exceeding $5.00 a jar, it was a luxury we couldn’t always justify. This sparked an idea: could I replicate this fantastic dip at home, making it more accessible and budget-friendly?
My detective work began with a closer look at the ingredient list – a step I probably should have taken sooner! To my surprise, the base ingredients for Toby’s Feta Dip were almost identical to their popular Ranch flavor, with the key difference being the feta itself. This was my “aha!” moment. I already had a much-loved Ranch Dressing & Dip recipe that we regularly made from scratch, which was both delicious and cost-effective. The logical next step was to experiment by adding feta to my homemade ranch base. The results were astounding! It was not just good; it was *really* good – remarkably similar in taste and texture to the store-bought version, but at a fraction of the cost. This proved that making premium dips and dressings at home was not only possible but also incredibly rewarding, both for our taste buds and our wallets.

Refining the Recipe: Achieving the Perfect Creamy Consistency
While the initial homemade feta-ranch combination was a hit, I continued to refine the recipe, striving for an even richer, thicker dip that could still be easily thinned for a dressing or sauce. My secret? Incorporating Greek yogurt alongside the sour cream. This addition not only boosts the creaminess but also adds a subtle tang and a dose of probiotics, making the dip even healthier. The Greek yogurt provides a wonderfully thick base, perfect for dipping, yet remains incredibly simple to transform into a pourable dressing with a bit more milk. This new formulation surpassed my expectations, offering a flavor and texture profile far superior to the mayo-heavy bases often found in commercial products.
The result is a versatile, irresistible creamy feta dip that truly is a keeper. Everyone who tries it raves about its fresh flavor and luxurious texture. It’s perfect as a dip for a vibrant crudités platter, sturdy crackers, or crispy chips. But don’t stop there! Try thinning it slightly and drizzling it generously over lettuce and chicken-stuffed homemade whole wheat pita bread – it’s an absolute game-changer. You’ll wonder how you ever lived without this incredible homemade staple.

Creamy Feta Dip & Dressing
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup sour cream decrease by 1/4 c. for dressing
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or regular yogurt*
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 large garlic clove minced
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley or 1 tablespoon chopped fresh
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 to 3/4 teaspoon sea salt -to taste (feta is salty, so it depends on the variety and how much you use – start with the smaller amount)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon dried dill or 1 teaspoon fresh optional
- ⅓ to ½ cup buttermilk add 1 teaspoon vinegar to milk to equal the amount needed if you can’t find real [ no fillers] buttermilk
- ¾ to 1 cup crumbled feta cheese or to taste- more is better
Instructions
-
In a pint jar or quart-sized bowl, combine the sour cream, Greek yogurt, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried parsley, onion powder, sea salt, black pepper, and optional dried dill. Stir or whisk these ingredients together until they are thoroughly blended and smooth.
-
Gradually add the buttermilk to the mixture, stirring continuously until your desired dip consistency is achieved. If you’re aiming for a thinner dressing, you will add more milk later (see notes below). Once the base is ready, gently fold in the crumbled feta cheese. If you used a bowl, transfer the finished dip into a jar with a tight-fitting lid for storage.
-
For optimal flavor and thickness, refrigerate the feta dip for at least one hour before serving. Chilling allows the flavors to meld beautifully and the dip to set. Before serving, taste and adjust any seasonings as needed; you might want a pinch more salt or pepper.
-
Remember to shake or stir well before each use, as the dip’s consistency may change slightly in the refrigerator. If you find it has thinned out and you prefer a thicker dip, simply stir in a bit more sour cream, and adjust salt and pepper to taste.
Notes
To Thin for Dressing: To transform this creamy dip into a pourable salad dressing or sauce, gradually add more milk (any type you prefer) one tablespoon at a time, stirring well after each addition, until the desired pourable consistency is reached.
